Title language problem

this problem exists for more then 4 years, why can't IMDB fix this already?  i hate that websites use the local IP to set language instead of browser.
And most of the titles are from usa or anime from japan. I want the damned original title.

Yes currently i live in south america, that still doesn't mean that i speak the local language, and even less that i wan't anything  displayed in it. So many websites do this and pisses me off so much.
btw not only imdb by all (i mean really every single on) my settings are set to usa/english.

With the titles in the current locallanguage i have to use websearch to know the original title, such a hassle.

Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: Titles in wrong language.

Sorry about this -- we are frustrated by this issue too.  One of the reasons we have been unable to fix this relates to the old software platform which was finally retired on Friday (see https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/upcoming-changes-to-several-imdb-features-du6man1opd5q0)

It has also been tricky to provide the best experience due to the way we store some of the information about original titles vs. local titles. We are now free to fix this in 2018.

Until we have a full solution, our recommendation is to go to your site settings at https://www.imdb.com/preferences/general and on the menu "Title display country" please choose "Original" which is the first item on the menu.  This will block the localization of titles which should improve things, even though there will still be some issues.

thanks, but that doesn't help at all. Im a member of imdb for almost 5 years and since day 1 my
preferences are set to united states / english. And for so many years now i get many titles in the wrong language. My browsers language and locale are set to usa/english.

Thanks, yes, the broken data model is part of the problem here. We (rather stupidly) do not record the language of the original title, so even when you select USA/English, we do not even have the data to tell us the right title to display. We are at least now able to do something about this without the old software slowing us down.

In the meantime, if you are mostly a fan / viewer of English language titles, then selecting "Original" for the title display language is overall the best option as it will give you more of the titles in which you are interested in English.

Hi Col,

Thanks for this response which explains some of the issue

I'm having a similar problem with exporting playlists.  Although my "Title display country" is set to Australia (and it appears to work - viewing playlists shows the correct titles), when I export the playlist to csv, the localised title is used.  It's probably a small thing in the grand scheme, but it's an issue that I'm sure a lot of users are coming across.

Any suggestions for this one?

Oh, and I was going to add a feature request: Could we please get the plot (short or long) also included in the csv?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Movie titles keep appearing in my language, instead of english.

Even though I have in my settings set as United States for Title display country and English for Title display language, some movie titles still appear translated in my language (Romanian), on the website. Is there any setting I'm missing?

as i see not only imdb, but most websites simply ingore the "locale" setting and use the IP instead. Which i really wrong, as the locale corresponds to the language that the use actually uses, and the ip only shows where he is (and not the language)

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Title Display Preferences Don't Work.

Hello,

I want all movie titles to be displayed in english, although I live in Croatia, Europe. No matter how much I fiddle with Title Display preferences on my Site Preferences page, I cannot get english titles in some cases. I log in, set Title Display Country to United States and Title Display Language to English, yet for some movies I'm still getting croatian titles.

Examples:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0947810/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1402488/

By the way, titles in the example above display their english title when I use Original Titles, but I don't want to use Original Titles, because in those cases foreign movies will not be displayed in english, obviously.

PS. I tried akas.imdb.com. The behaviour is the same. Also, I tried several browsers.

PPS. When I check the "Show reference view (old title/name page layout)" in Site Preferences, then it works as intended, so it must be something about the new (not so new anymore) web layout!

Thank you

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Even if I choose English as dispaly language I see movie titles in my native lang....

I changed all the settings ("Title display country/region" and "Title display language") but it does not help. Could you please stop monitoring my locale and use the language I chose?

yep, 2018 and this problem still persists - instead of using the system locale and/or language IMDB still uses the local IP.
it surely shouldn't be so hard to adress this.

All websites, if they are going to tailor content according to language at all for anonymous visitors, are supposed to do so according to the HTTP accept-language header (sent by web browsers); only tailoring according to geographical location as a last resort; but apparently not every web developer got the memo.
