Popularity Ranking no longer visible for some titles

The Popularity Ranking for many titles is now no longer visible, where it was last week.

Examples:

These titles still show it though:

Was there a change in implementation, so that the least popular titles are no longer ranked?

Thanks for the help.

It appears as though only the top 5000 are shown. Is this an intentional change?

Previously, every title that existed for more than a week had a popularity ranking. I remember seeing some in the hundreds of thousands last week. Why are they no longer visible?

@rmaloney  We have not changed anything related to popularity recently, sorry, and you are correct on the Top 5,000 limit. Perhaps you previously had access to IMDbPro which does show rankings for all titles?

@Col_Needham Interesting. No, I've never had IMDbPro, so I'm not sure why I was able to see the ranking for all titles. It's been that way for at least the past few months, up until the last few days.

Is this only a feature of IMDbPro?

@rmaloney Perhaps you were previously only looking at titles within the Top 5,000.  Here’s a capture of one of the titles you listed above on archive.org from October 2021 when it was also outside the Top 5K and no ranking is shown -> https://web.archive.org/web/20211027174644/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072687/

Is this only a feature of IMDbPro?

Yes, rankings outside the Top 5K are only available on IMDbPro, and as mentioned above, we have not made any recent changes here at all.

Hope this helps.

Nope, I'm positive that's not the case.

Here are two counterexamples from Archive.org:

  1. 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything from August 13, 2022, with a popularity ranking of 9,508.
  2. The Big Cigar from September 1, 2022, with a popularity ranking of 7,994.

@rmaloney  Thanks.  It seems the ranking is not currently displaying between 5K-10K. We will open a ticket with the appropriate team.  Just checking you do not have any examples beyond 10K though?

@Col_Needham I've seen many rankings above 10k. Here are several:

I have also seen multiple pages in the 100k-200k range, but I can't find examples of them in Archive.org.

If this is suppose to be an IMDbPro feature, it seems like a bug was recently fixed to correctly hide rankings below 5k.

@rmaloney  Thanks.  This issue is being tracked via ticket #P72352200.  Sorry for incorrectly remembering this was limited to the Top 5K -- it is name rankings which are only published to 5K.

@rmaloney  We now have an explanation to what happened here.  The current Top 5K ranking limit for names and titles is correct. My replies yesterday were therefore also correct.

It turns out there was a bug accidentally introduced in late July which was fixed last week -- while the bug was active, rankings outside the Top 5,000 on titles were displayed, hence your archive.org links.

@Col_Needham Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation :)
