'Movies Like This' Section Missing

Hi. I noticed that IMDB no longer offers suggestions / recommendations on movie pages for 'Movies Like This' or similar movies. Love what you guys do at IMDB but i really loved this section as it helped me find some hidden gems simply by looking up a movie i really liked. Please bring it back. Thanks.

The feature is not available on all titles, sorry, as we require a certain amount of data to feed into the system which generate the list of similar titles.

We have a ticket open to better document this.

Can you let users manually suggest similar titles and vote on them? Rather having done automatically by machine? You could also let us add comments on how they are similar.

@Col_Needham horrible policy and weak explanation..I know tech. It's a simple feature to standardize across all views and browsing and apps

Ah ok, thanks for the clarification Col. Its a great feature so itd be really nice to also have it on the smaller, independent film pages if it was possible in the future fwiw. Thanks again for confirming through

I wanted to follow up on this as I have the same problem with the desktop version of imdb.com. The explanation given by Col Needham makes sense except I see this section on every page I have looked on in the app but in some of the corresponding pages on the desktop version don't have it which doesn't make sense. For example this title https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4820370/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1 shows More Like This in the app but not the desktop. I came across more but haven't made a list yet.

Is there a reason for this discrepancy?

Thanks.

Hi Karen,

Different devices may give slightly different options in the 'More like this' section, to offer a wider range of suggestions for what to watch next.

For more information, please check out our Help page: What is the 'More Like This' section?

Thanks Claire. I understand it can look different across devices but my point is that it shows in the app for that page I referenced but it doesn't appear at all for the same page on the desktop version. I'm not sure why that would be the case. Seems odd or a bug.

Hi Karen,

This is not a bug. As mentioned before by Claire, the sections can differ across the app and desktop versions of IMDb - this includes possibly appearing on one and not the other.

We appreciate your concern in bringing this to our attention!

Hi Steve. I'm sorry but in this case I consider it to be a bug. To have an entire content section not appear on a particular page in the desktop version only to have it appear on the same page in the app makes no sense and provides a bad user experience. After all if I hadn't decided to look at the page on my phone I wouldn't have discovered other programs I might like that are similar to the one I was viewing because looking at the same page on my laptop didn't even show the section.

This isn't a case of functionality appearing that enhances the use of either the desktop version or the app version which means the same functionality might not appear on both. This is a case of a content section that provides additional information for the user appearing on a page in the app version but not appearing on the same page in the desktop version.

@karen_norton agree with the bad user experience part of your excellently put Comment

Thanks for the reply!! Is this still an issue? I stopped using the desktop version out of frustration because I use that recommendations section all the time. I can understand if a movie/show requires a certain amount of info before the system can make recommendations but what doesn't make sense is when it appears on a specific page on certain devices, but not on others. That's a bug. I do tech for a living and this would be considered a bug. Now I use the app almost exclusively but prefer the desktop experience because of the larger screen.

@karen_norton All of the examples given in this two-year old thread now have a “More Like This” section on the IMDb sites and apps.

Excellent. Thanks!! Now I can go back to using the desktop version. So was this a bug that was fixed across the board or are we supposed to keep reporting them on a case by case basis?

Edit: I don't normally comment on a 2yr old post but someone just replied to my comment from a couple years ago saying it was a bad user experience so I thought this might still be an issue on the desktop version.

@karen_norton Ah, it was never a bug; just a slightly different implementation across the sites and apps.  The difference now is that all IMDb interfaces should be using the same recommendations data.
