It exists within "advanced search." If you go to the search bar, to the drop down menu to the right, you'll choose "advanced search," then choose "advanced title search," and check the genre's you want to include. From there you can include/exclude things you want, like exclude tv shows and series if you just want films, etc.

Hope that made sense and helps!

You can also browse lists of films by genre via this page:

http://www.imdb.com/genre/

Giancarlo...i was aware that this option exists but somehow i cannot find it on the home page and that's...well...stupid...and when you click on eg. Animation movies are not sorted by any criteria...

I think that a site like IMDB has to do better regarding their interface/design!!

When you select a genre from the list (e.g. http://www.imdb.com/genre/animation ) the titles are sorted by popularity.

You can sort/filter the list by other criteria using the link in the section in the upper right corner of the page under 'Refine by. For example, if you wanted to restrict the list only to Japanese-language animated films, you would click on 'Refine by -> Language' and then select Japanese from the list, which would take you to http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genr...

The list can also be sorted by different criteria by clicking on the column headings. For example, clicking on 'US Boxoffice' would reorder the list and put the most commercially successful titles first: http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genr...

How about searching by genre in the iOS app? I don't see an advanced search option in the app search function.

Can I search by genre within the iOS app?

In the app there is a Most Popular by Genre listing. That is probably the best you can do.

I appreciate that. I would really want a true advanced search function in the iPad app. Since the IMDb has DATABASE in its name a robust and useful search should go without saying.

Well IMDb was a database 25 years ago and there weren't too many iPads then...

You might create a new thread in the suggestion, or "idea" section in case it's not already in planning.

Cool. I'll go there and do that.
Just a question - if its not a database now, what is it?

I guess my point was, the iPad app is a new thing, relatively speaking, to the site and is still evolving. The main focus of the site is the database itself and it wasn't created and developed with iPads in mind.  It might take some time to make the old stuff compatible with the new stuff.

None taken. You're welcome.

I notice someone has suggested it and you've replied there. https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/search_by_genre_on_the_mobile_app

Better than, or just as good as replying, is to give a "me too" vote for the idea.  The more an idea is voted for, the better staff can identify it as a popular idea.  Then they might move it up on the to-do list. If your idea is for better search in general, you should post a new thread, but if you feel that thread sums up your suggestion, it's probably better to promote the idea in other places, getting folks to come and add votes (even social media, etc.). This board doesn't get a huge amount of traffic as it's mostly people posting about a problem and when they get the assistance they need, they move on. So adding traffic to the thread beyond this forum would help.

But for starters, I'd add your own vote!
