Follow other users and be notified of their ratings and other activities on IMDb

If we just can add our friends like facebook and share our movies and ratings together I think it would be more fun and useful :) And also we can compare our rating history and that would be very good for users :)

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Seeing your friends' ratings.

When I try to compare my ratings to my friends' under a specific genre, it gets lost - when I click to refine ratings, it only shows my ratings and not theirs. We can only compare our ratings  based on which titles we last watched and we have to scroll for a long time if we watched a certain movie a while back. If there is a way to solve this, please do.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Quick way to add friend and share ratings with them!.

It would be great if there is some social activities in this site. I mean, if you are able to add friends and receive some kind of news feed updates on their activity like what movie they have watched lately and how they rate the movie...

Also, the biggest thing, there should be a way to see all of your friend rates on the movie page!

So lets say you have discovered a movie and you are on the movie page to check it out it would be grate if you can also see if any of your friends had been seen this already and how they rated it or even if they wrote a review about the movie etc.

And i can think of many other ideas around this, like sending recommendations to friends right after you watch something and visit the site to rate it. I think this is what the site is missing right now. I think there is way to add friends trough the board but there is no use of that. Right now I have a special folder in my bookmarks bar with links to my friend profiles so i can check from time to time if they had watched something interesting but that's just...

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Movie recommendations for two people / groups.

Hello,

Since a lot of users use imdb to keep track of movies they've seen or would like to watch, and even find "recommended" movie, I would find it very helpful / interesting to be able to compare watchlists and even get common film recommendations.

The "you both have these movies in your watchlist" is a feature that already exists, but you have to go through several steps to get the list (friend profile / friend's lists / watchlist / refine / you and this list / titles in my watchlist). It would be cool having access to this specific list (titles in both people's watchlists) directly from any public profile.

The "movies both of you should enjoy based on the recommendation engine" does not exist at all as far as I know, but it would be sooo cool! Can you imagine, accessing a friend's profile and directly seeing titles matching both people's tastes... that would really be a cool feature. You could even imagine creating groups with two friends or more, and seeing what everybody should enjoy. It would also prevent people from using other services when they miss this feature here. ;-)

Thank you for your time!

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Compatibility lists.

Since we can compare ratings now, it would be very useful I think to have a compatibility list. You could use it to find users with similar tastes and find new things to watch. Rateyourmusic has a feature like this. I'm not sure how it works, but by looking at their "compare" feature I would guess it works like this: if for one rating the other person's score is two points above or two points below yours or anywhere within the range between those two points, it will count it as a close enough rating that it adds to your compatibility score (and I think they go two points either way for the benefit of people who like to use a five-point scale (like me), or maybe so that scores won't always be incredibly low since most people have such wildly varying tastes). Anything else lessens it. An exact match might add to your compatibility score even more. Using this score they rank the top 100 highest scoring users for you, and they have a bar beside the usernames that represents the relative score.

The benefit of having the list is that you don't have to click through the profiles of every user on the entire site to find the ones most compatible with you, and most likely to recommend you something that you'll like. Not to mention that it's annoying to click through a bunch of profiles and see that none of them have made their ratings public. It's like, why bother looking at all?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Improve lists.

Get the lists a social approach, allowing to add friends and see their lists, reccomend lists, follow lists (to see new additions, in a timeline or notifications), search for lists, vote for relevance to improve reccomendations (and send to bottom lists like 'Movies i've seen'), filters with type and not this slide-bar (it's terrible to select a range of years through mobile). Also, create automatic lists for actors, directors, writers etc to filter 'Titles i've rated', 'In Watchlist' etc from a specific person/character.

I would really like IMDB to have a feature sort-of like Goodreads where I can have "friends" and share movies and reviews with each other.

I want to see what my friend like, and add them to a sort of list about what they saw and how they liked it.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Synthesize Watchlists.

Two or more people are getting together. Each has an IMDb Watchlist. They want to see a list of movies that appear on each person's Watchlist, or on as many Watchlists as possible.

This functionality may call for a difference between private and shared Watchlists.

I think that should facilitate the connection and interaction between members , facilitate the way you add friends and the ability to view your facebook friends and visit their profiles.

What about a simple filter, that shows all movies from the watchlist of another person, that you have on yourwatchlist yourself?

On this way you can decide, which movie to watch with friends, that noone has seen yet.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled More possibilities for you IMDB friends.

There is one thing that really bothers me. My boyfriend and I are big film buffs, I asked him to join IMDB to rate movies and then the problem started. First we had a huge problem to add each other to friends - there are no notifications, no inbox on the main page, in my opinion it should be in a visible place, not that I always go to News&Community -> Message Boards  then I can see my profile picture and "friends" on the right, I have to choose friends then click on my bf's profile picture JUST to go to his profile. Uhhh, that's so troublesome but I see no other choice. When I'm watching his ratings it shows MY ratings to those movies and his rating is really tiny, almost visible there. In my opinion his rating should be bigger, like the IMDB yellow rating and then MY rating could be super small cause it's HIS page I'm looking at.
There is still more that bothers me.
For example when I'm on a certain movie's page I can't see my friends' ratings. There is an information about my rating and if I added this movie to my watchlist but nothing about my friends. It would be AMAZING if I could enter a page and see "your friend X added this movie to his watchlist" or "your friend X rated this movie 5" then I wouldn't have to go to his profile and look for that movie just to see if he saw it...
This website is really cool but it looks like you never change anything, it should be more "modern" imho, even with the app cause I can't go to my bf's profile from my phone app, this is just so annoying.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Transform IMDB to a movie Social Network.

A movies related social network. Where people can communicate, share movie related content, like, share and comment on each-other's movie ratings, opinions. Thematic / genre tagged movie lists can receive suggestions, comments and be rated by the users who found value in them. Also voting on a certain roles or actor performance in a specific move will enrich this further. When combined with current badges, it can really become huge and compensate for the deleted forums.

When this platform is connected to other social networks, an option to share rating of the movie you just rated or the review you just wrote will bring much more people form other social networks.

With all this, people will be more involved, more fan merchandize can be sold and more people can be reached.

Such might be fine idea as long as nobody forgets the prime directives of IMDb. I should think that protection of the patrons from malicious behavior would require a large number of employees, contractors or volunteers with specialized training. Thus, it might be best if the social aspects would be worked out via an API for third party providers. Something like this already exists for IMDb lists with the Facebook comments plugin, but I take issue with the fact that nobody (who has the ability) bothers to police these sections to ward off abusive behavior, and clearly only the Facebook company can do it. Maybe IMDb could be setup to conceal all of these comments sections from people who are not logged into Facebook.

If they just brought back the discussion boards and there also added the option to add other users as friends and see their lists and ratings that would be good. Sadly I dont see any of this happening
