Feedback on new photo viewer design

There is no longer a windowed overlay when viewing photos.  There used to be an x in the top corner to click that would return to the movie page, but some moron decided to remove this feature.  Gotta click the movie links now on the photo info to return to the movie page. Yeah I know, this may seem petty, but its just bad web coding.

One more major issue:

The new layout does not show the updated notes on images as soon as they were updated.

It takes a few minutes before displaying the changes.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one experiencing this but I hope someone verifies this by testing it themselves. I'd have posted an example but since it's a temporary effect, I doubt it'd stay long enough for the reader (of this message) to verify it.

I noticed this problem 1-2 weeks ago but forgot to report. Sorry.

Thanks for the additional notes, Sinnerphile & BONAFIDE BOSS.
  1. Images not loading -- the team will look into this. Definitely a bug.
  2. "Escape" doesn't work to close the image -- good feedback; we'll look into updating this.
  3. Changes to notes aren't reflected right away -- thanks for reporting; we'll investigate.
  4. Color markup doesn't show -- color markup has been unsupported for a while; I understand this limits your ability to test colors in polls, and apologize for the inconvenience.

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to share feedback. Though we won't be able to address every request, I am reading them!

Sarah,

Thank you for the status update.

I hope that IMDb consider supporting color markup in lists again. I understand that this is additional parsing code that needs support for list. However, there are many new and legacy polls the make effective use of color in their presentation. Having to guess whether color markup will work adds an additional layer of uncertainty in verifying that polls will display properly.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Recent change to photos is very annoying..

If I click on photos, and click through them, there is no exit from photos. I have to back arrow over and over again or start over.  Maybe I am missing something, but I have tried to find an exit from scrolling through photos, and the new format just doesn't seem to have a one or two click exit back to the main entry.

So I have read the info about ad blocker and the navigation issue.  The imdb ads were over the top, abusive to the nervous systems of users and took a lot of time to load.  I am usually a big fan of Amazon, and of imdb.  That said, if I have to choose between using a service and feeling held hostage to ads that abuse the privilege of access to my screen, then I will just have to settle for less than sterling performance by Amazon, which usually has very good customer awareness.  I wonder if Jeff Bezos uses an ad blocker.

I'm sure Jeff Bezos has access to the corporate version that does not show ads, so he has no need for an ad blocker.

"the corporate version that does not show ads"

Just a note: this doesn't exist! We all look at ads while developing IMDb, the same as everyone else :)

If indeed this is true (and I have no reason to believe it is false), then the obvious implication (based on my previous post in this thread re IE and the ads) is that IE is no longer considered a valid browser. I have to believe the problem with ads in the new viewer when using IE would have been caught immediately.

Hi James -- we do test in IE, but sometimes IMDb users have different operating system / browser version combinations than we test on, or have other extensions installed that impact performance. We're looking into the ads bug you reported. Thank you.

Hi John, if you hover over the image area you should see left and right arrows that let you navigate. You can also use the keyboard's arrow keys, or swipe if you have a touch device.

Going to photos for a movie had stopped the black screen nonsense and gone back to the usual way of being able to click the x to return to photos section.  Not the black screen with no exit is back.  I have read the issue concerns ads and blocking them.  I would be fine with a few ads, but imdb got so over the top with them that I got an ad blocker.  I can use imdb less, if that is the intent of the black no exit screen.  I am just surprised an Amazon company has such poor customer interface, as I know other folks have issues with this.  Usually Amazon does better than this.

Are you talking about viewing the photo gallery for a title?

If I click on photos, and click through them, there is no exit to get out of individual photos back to photos section.  I even turned off the ad blocker and it made no difference.  So I turned the ad blocker back on.  Sure wish they would fix this.

imdb is having an awful time with their new photo viewer.  It does not function well, and the imdb community powered by satisfaction is being no help in getting the word to imdb that there is a problem.  It has come and gone and returned on my visits to imdb, other people are having the problem.  Imdb is blaming it on using ad blocker, but when I turned the ad blocker off it made no difference in the problem.

I see the horrible sexy photo viewer is baaaack! When it reappeared in Firefox last week, I actually switched to Edge. Just to avoid this photoviewer!!

Alas, my reprieve has come to an end in Edge as of yesterday. There is nowhere to hide.

So I wanted to complain again. :)

As someone who is constantly on IMDB uploading and downloading artwork, - not having the ability to right click/save images is a major P.I.T.A.  Functionality-wise the new viewer 'works' but it feels sluggish and bloated compared to the old viewer. The whole 'fading in/out' of elements is slow and annoying.

The "back" button on the upper left is not good. You know, generally when people enter a photo gallery they are clicking on the right arrow from start to finish until it round-robins, and

at which point are looking to close the photoviewer. The old viewer with the "X" on the upper right made more sense, was more intuitive, and much closer to where my cursor ended up after clicking through a gallery (on the right side of the page).  The "back" link on the left is confusing in that it may lead the user to thinking it will take them "back" to the previous PHOTO, when in fact it exits the viewer.

Really wish you'd provide an option in IMDB settings/preferences for users to be able to toggle the 'enhanced photo viewer thing' off/on.   Anyway..  I just hate it. Currently I'm getting it on Firefox and Edge but it seems Chrome is getting the old viewer now?? guess i can switch to chrome for now.

ciao

Okay, so my feedback so far.

- This function has taken away the ability to save images from IMDb, a great disappointment for anyone who's saved images before. There was a roundabout way done before, but a direct way would be better.

- Also, I think a few images have been zoomed up by the new viewer design. I'm not sure if this is me or there is an actual zoom going on, but a few images look blurred up/magnified by this new viewer. And it's really frustrating. Why have a gallery if the images can't be clearly shown off?

Totally agree that this new viewer thing just does not make sense.

Hi sai_arun_muthusamy –

I'm curious about this:

a few images look blurred up/magnified by this new viewer

If you have URLs to share that show this behavior, can you post them here? We don't intend to zoom/magnify any images; we do reduce the size of larger images to fit them in the window and to optimize download size.

Thanks!

Is there, I wonder, a critical mass number of complaints they need to achieve before the head of imdb can justify the time and effort to fix this thing?  Out of all the problems going on, why mess with something that is working just for something to do?

They don't need any more critique than ours. The viewer breaks save image - that's it.

In the old version of browsing photos, all I needed to do was use ESC to get out and return to the page I was on.  Now, the only way I can see to return is to use the back arrow.  This is kind of burdensome...if I have browsed a hundred photos do I really need to use the back arrow a hundred times to return to the page?

Thanks for your quick response.  As you can see, I do not have that back button.  This has been my frustration, no way back except the scrolling arrows.

Well, if that is the way it has to be.  One of those Gotchas.  I'd rather not see ads than see photos.  IMDb giveth, IMDb taketh away.

Interesting. In my browser, it shows up as "close" instead of "back".

My primary browser is Firefox.  I just tried Opera, my backup.  There I have the "close" button.  Interesting.  Guess I will switch browsers for IMDb.

There is a work-around: to use an ad blocker that allows you to specify that ads are ok on mediaviewer pages in IMDb.  Instructions provided here:

When looking at photos from a movie, I used to be able to right click and save the photo to my computer. How can I download an image.

Can't save images from the context (right-click) menu anymore, or any other possible way from my knowledge. This was one of my main reasons to visit the site, in order to get official info and images for my movie collection.

Hi, PhreakOneTwo. Welcome to the IMDb Community forum! Which web browser do you use for navigating IMDb?

Hey there jeorj_euler,

I'm currently using Chrome (latest version) and have not yet tried any other. Will be trying out the fairly new Brave Browser, and may migrate over to that permanently.

I'd like to mention that I'm not a fan of having to use a specific web browser in order to access a globally common feature such as this. It's just poor coding and rushed out the door.....

As many will say "If it ain't broke - don't fix it, and especially don't update it with new features and break it in the process".

O, I suspect that the disabling of the context menu was neither by accident nor through negligence. For this reason, I'm reluctant to offer up a non-builtin tool to circumvent it. In this case, Chrome (or at least the version of it that I'm using) is at a disadvantage, as it does not provide a way for the user to view the page metadata in summary format along with the media objects, permissions and SSL certificates. I've never used Brave before, by the way.
