Editing Lists is still a nightmare

It really needs to be reverted to back to how it was because the new version is still a nightmare; you type in the number you want to move it to, click save list order, then done, and nothing happens.  And if something does happen, only a few of the items you're moving are actually moved.  It's truly a disaster if you want switch around a number of different ones, because EVERYTHING gets jumbled up.  It's untenable.

The way it used to be, you'd click on item no.10 for instance, and drag it to wherever you wanted it to go, and when you let go of the mouse at that destination, say, no.5, the number would change on its own.  It made editing take seconds, rather than minutes currently.

Hi Chris,

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue while attempting to update your list.

So that we can further investigate, can you please provide us with the following additional information?
  • Your browser name and version number
  • URL of the list you're attempting to edit
  • Specific titles you attempted to reorder, their current position, and preferred position
  • Screenshots of the page once you've attempted to reorder
Thanks in advance. We look forward to assisting you further.

Up to date Chrome, it applies to all of my lists, a myriad of titles over the last few months, I really don't have time to screenshot (am at work), sorry!  Perhaps you can see for yourself whilst trying to make a list; I assume it's a general issue rather than a singular one.  If I, for instance, move no.40 to 10 and 15 to 25, it would appear that rather than change those 4 numbers (again, old system didn't require any of this; it was click, drag and done), every other list item in between seemingly needs to have its position changed too.

It sounds like Chris Dynamo is referring to the difficulty to predict where titles will land when you specify a new position number, especially when moving more than 1 title at a time, or even moving 1 title forward (eg., 15 to 25).

Recently I tried to reverse a 5-item list, and instead of getting Titles ABCDE, I got ACBDE. For that example, and links to prior posts with examples of Save List Order problems, see https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/update-to-list-pages?utm_source=notification&utm_medium=...

If we cannot have drag/drop (and why not?), or perhaps in addition to drag/drop, what I think is needed is a human-friendly specification, with a simple explanation posted near the Save List Order link. Rather than focusing only on the position number, if the algorithm would track which Title/Name we are attempting to move something immediately before, then people could predict what was going to happen. Of course, that means we humans should not also move the "before target" title/name in the same batch as it's being used as a target.

This new system is too convoluted without a doubt, it can't be saved. The fact that imdb don't seem to have noticed is a problem also; if only one of their staff tried making lists, they'd fix problems before they even began. Drag/drop is so simple that I can't fathom why it was removed, in favour of something so ghastly. It needs to be restored, to make lists easy again, rather than a chore.

Claire, I appreciate the update, you've passed our feedback along, sure, but can't we agree that this system is ridiculously complicated?  I got a headache just reading what you typed, let alone trying it myself!  Compared to a simple drag and drop, this new system is so tough to use and more importantly, unbelievably time consuming, it's like going back decades, it's so low tech that it's unreal.

I reordering lists is broken. I am using the latest version of chrome and just trying to update one of my lists that has 166 movies and shows.

Moving an entry from one spot to another works unpredictably there are blank numbers in the list and when moving an entry to a blank number may even result in the movie to a place well below that number an on to a duplicate number.

I have 4 entries withe the number 107. I should have only one. when the Done button is clicked at a minimum the blanks should be pressed out and the numbers rationalized with the displayed order so that you can start editing again and sort out that mess.

Drag and drop reordering may have had some problems but nothing like this programmed disaster. Please clean this up you are really messing with my OCD.

You said:

Can you share the URL of that list, and make it Public if it's not already?

The only time I've seen duplicate position numbers is on my Watchlist, as reported here:
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/edit-watchlist-position-numbers-re-used
And when editing that today, I noticed it had no duplicates. (And back on that post, another user reported not seeing the problem on his Watchlist, so it wasn't universal.)

I've not seen blank position numbers anywhere...yet.

@Al Brown
Thanks for sharing your list.

By your description, that the Done button didn't smooth out the blank and duplicate position numbers, I thought we'd see that in View mode. I don't, at least not among the first 110 titles. But the View is likely assigning its own numbers.

Because, when I Export your list, I see position numbers like I've never seen before: both missing numbers and duplicates.

I recommend you create a new list, and copy the contents and description from this one, so that you have a healthy list to operate upon. Copying should assign new position numbers. Also probably new dates Created and Modified.

I don't know if IMDb might want to investigate this list to see what might have happened.
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls031658741/
Here's a screenshot of the first 24 titles in the Export. Note missing positions 4, 8, 10, 14, 16, 17, 19, 21, 25, and duplicates at 12, 15, 18, 20, 22, 24.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give imdb a chance to review and sort it out before I do that.  The further down the list I go the worse it gets.

I think that the blanks are caused when I remove one from the list then its very random I can use that number again.

I'd think that this would be low hanging fruit to fix by just doing a cleanup and rationalization on the order when the "Done" button is clicked saving like the non-editing view then allowing me to edit again to sort out any issues.

I had a couple of issues with the drag and drop but nothing like this and drag and drop never left such a mess when I moved things around at least I could hit done and then back into edit to go back to what I was doing.

Its a shame I can't just export the list delete all and then manipulate the spreadsheet and import to the order I want.

Thanks again.

Holy Mackerel, I've got this disease in one of my lists too.
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls020853190/

I don't add/delete/reorder using Edit Mode, though. I can't say I never did, but I don't usually. I have no need to reorder these titles, and I delete from the title page, and add by copying from elsewhere (usually the Watchlist).

Here's what I saw a few minutes ago (see position 6):

It was time to delete Tonight and Every Night, which resulted in this:

So what was in position 7 became the 3rd position 6.

Houston, we have a problem.

This is a working list for me, and I'll likely be ready to delete It's a Pleasure in the next 24 hours, and all of the items 1-8 in the next 2-3 weeks or less.

And, yes, in Edit mode, all 3 titles display as position 6:

I feel your pain.  I do think that this should be easy for them to fix, a tweak here a hack there and tada. :)

I'm much more concerned about the Cause of the bad numbering than the fix.
If it can corrupt the position number, what else might be at risk? Will it start dropping records altogether?
And what the heck is "IT", Edit mode? Did I reorder one record once, and that caused the dupes? Because, as I mentioned, I don't usually use Edit on this list.

I just did a backup of my lists. ("A backup" means individual exports. I wish there were a backup function.)

Thank you for this additional information, everyone.

I've forwarded this to our technical team for further investigation.

We'll update this thread once we have further information.

Thanks in advance for your patience.

Thanks Claire, if you could underline the 'bring back drag and drop' bit, that would be great.

Claire, any update on drag and drop?  It's been 4 months, and no changes. Could you perhaps ask one of your colleagues to try editing a list multiple times?  It might take personal experience to understand just how horrific it is.

Hi everyone,

Please know that we've reported the feedback regarding the requests to change to a drag-and-drop re-ordering method rather than the manual entry of order numbers.

Our technical team has reported that the issue with the duplicate and missing order numbers has now been resolved. The exports of your lists should now follow the correct order.

Regarding the re-ordering of multiple items, please know that when you update the order position of multiple items within your list, the order of the remaining items will automatically shift down/up in rank accordingly; rather than simply swapping one item's position for the position of another item. For example:
  • Situation: if you have a list containing 10 items, and would like to move item #5 (Title A) to the 1st position, and item #3 (Title B) to the 10th position
  • Action: Change "5" to "1" and change "3" to "10"
  • Result: Title A will move to the 1st position, previous 1st title will move to 2nd position, 2nd title will move to 3rd, 4th title will remain in 4th, 6th title will move to 5th, 7th will move to 6th, 8th will move to 7th, 9th will move to 8th, 10th will move to 9th, and Title B will move to 10th.

Please let us know if we can offer any further help.

Claire, Employee

Thanks for the update. But it is highly premature to mark this issue "Solved."

As I reported above here:
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/editing-lists-is-still-a-nightmare?topic-reply-list[settings...
Edit mode displayed the same position number for multiple titles. It still does that now:

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls020853190/

And the results for Export are still the same:

I suspect that if you look at the raw data, you will see these position numbers there too. Something somewhere along the line corrupted it. And as I remove titles from the list (it's a custom watchlist), the funky positions didn't get removed with the titles that had them; they just shifted from position 6 to position 1. It will take at least 5 weeks for the next of these 3, A Song is Born, to be removed from the list.

So far as the sort algorithm: I already understood how it works. I'm saying it needs to work BETTER, more intuitively for humans, or we still need drag/drop.

Thanks, bderoes, for your feedback and for confirming that the issue is persisting with your list.

Can you please confirm the list URL of all lists where you're currently experiencing the issue with duplicate list position numbers?

Claire, the url is in both my first message about this, and the one I posted today.
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls020853190/

I haven't looked through all 150+ lists that I have on 2 accounts. Based on the initial post, I figured this one had the most adding and removing, so it's the one I examined and found the dupes.
My other account is https://www.imdb.com/user/ur59730239/ if you want to look through those lists, but they are even more static than the ones at

lavendel02sh,
What do you mean by "doesn't work"?
I can edit MY lists. A large quantity of reordering is indeed a nightmare, but it can be done. I just have to focus on "move forward, 1 less; move backward, right there".)
Is your list damaged (missing or duplicate position numbers, visible in Edit or Export)? If so, IMDb can fix it.

whenever i try to change a position and save, it ay 'an error occured. try again later', i've tried it multiple times now. the list appears normal tho, so do you know what could be the issue?

Is the list public?
If you share its url, I could try to export it and see if I detect something.

lavendel02sh, the link triggered the GS spam filter, probably due to how the link looks. I fished it out.

I don't see anything weird in the Export.
I then copied from your list to one I created, and tried to change position of a couple of images. I had no problem there.

If you don't mind losing the dates added, perhaps you should just move all these images to a new list. If you want to keep the same list url, then move them back into the emptied list. Hopefully that'll cure the problem.

What happened to IMDb?  No-one seems to work there anymore; we've waited years for feedback, lists are still a nightmare to make.  They made them 1000 times harder and more time consuming to create and rather than fix the problem by reverting lists back to how they used to be (quick and easy), IMDb's staff have just 'nope'd' and left the building, blocking our calls essentially.

I don't think it really would be "quick and easy" to revert to the old editing features, because IMDb did a big migration toward the end of 2017 to change the infrastructure of the data itself. So the old software wouldn't work with the new data structure without extensive changes. Or so the story goes.

Is there an iOS simulator that runs on Windows, so we could pretend to be an Apple device where drag/drop is supposedly implemented?

I've been having the same issue. Especially problematic when it comes to "ranking" lists. If you want to add a film near the top, you have to delete everything under the spot you need and then add everything all over again. Hard to imagine why this change was made.
