Autoplay of trailers on movie pages

IMDb has now implemented autoplay of trailers. Sort of.

Earlier when you went on a movie/tv-series page they had a thumbnail for a trailer and a play button. If you wanted to watch it, you'd click the play button. But now it just starts playing automatically. I realize it plays only the first ten seconds or so, and it does so silently.
However it is enough to annoy me to the point of writing this text.

Would you please be so kind and give us an option under account settings to turn this feature off?

Even though it is not as obnoxious and intrusive as the full on autoplay of trailers 'feature' that Netflix had (and now removed after years of complaints, thankfully), it is enough for my spoiler-sensitive eyes to wander where they shouldn't when I'm trying to look at the movie genre, director, writer, movie-length etc.
I don't watch most movie trailers for a reason.

Best regards.

Hi Nico,

Please know that we have been gathering feedback regarding this feature as our team has been testing a few different variations.
I do apologize but as a result you may see different experiences and variations.

Please, yes please remove this feature, what were you thinking in the first place? Why to force people to watch something whey they can watch it with just 1 click? is really that hard to click one time that you have to put it autoplay?
'The team has been testing different variation' really? what variations do you need to test? If anyone wants to watch the trailer just click, its one click. what else do you need?
Please remove this feature or you will force me to stop browsing iMDB.
thanks

Taylor

Thank you for looking into this. Have you found a solution?

It is problematic when using the app, because it drains the battery faster.

I live in a third world country and during lockdown (we are still in winter here and in lockdown) I was able to use just my smartphone. Contributing to IMDb has helped me to cope with the pandemic. Cheers.

I registered just to like this 3d. I never watched a trailer in the last 10 years... I hate them, please eliminate this!

I also made an account to say I hate this feature.

I don't like watching trailers as it spoils the movie for me. Even seeing a few seconds flash up on screen of a trailer can ruin the surprise of seeing a character for the first time or show you a glimpse of one of the main scenes. I realise there are also photos of the film on each page, but an autoplay video draws the eye much more. Especially as it is right at the top when you open a page. The photos are further down and can be glossed over when scrolling.

Now, every film I view on imdb, I have to quickly scroll down in order to not see the autoplay trailer. It's kind of ridiculous.

Please can we have a setting where we can turn this off if we want to? Thank you.

Hi all,

On desktop, you can use the button on the top right to toggle autoplay off.

On the IMDb app, you are welcome to update the autoplay settings by going to the "You" tab > Display (under General) > Autoplay video previews, where you can select between:

  1. Wifi and Cellular
  2. WiFi only
  3. No autoplay.
