Intriguing Movie and TV Split Personality Characters

Movies and TV series with multiple personality driven stories often have interesting plot twists. Equally intriguing is how each character acquired their particular set of personalities. More often than not, it is a clinical condition known as dissociative identity disorder. Regardless of the cause, it is a juicy opportunity for an actor or actress to demonstrate their range of acting talent.

The proper term is dissociative identity disorder.

Aaron should not be on this list, as his "other" personality was all an act and not due to mental illness.
Patrick Bateman did not have more than one personality. Just one crazy one who killed because he liked it, not a whole separate personality. A double life is not the same as a dual personality. Same with Regina Mills and Francis Dolarhyde.
I have both seen the film and read of the book of Shutter Island and it was DiCaprio's character who had DID.

FYC:
Robert Elliott - Dressed to Kill
Bae Soo-Mi - A Tale of Two Sisters/Anna - The Uninvited (Uninvited is the American remake of Sisters)
I don't know who (haven't seen it) - Frailty
 Alma - Persona
Stanley Ipkiss - The Mask

... The symptoms of dissociative disorders depend on the type of disorder that has been diagnosed. There are three types of dissociative disorders defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM):

... Dissociative identity disorder. Formerly known as multiple personality disorder, this disorder is characterized by alternating between multiple identities. A person may feel like one or more voices are trying to take control in their head. Often these identities may have unique names, characteristics, mannerisms and voices. People with DID will experience gaps in memory of every day events, personal information and trauma. Women are more likely to be diagnosed, as they more frequently present with acute dissociative symptoms. Men are more likely to deny symptoms and trauma histories, and commonly exhibit more violent behavior, rather than amnesia or fugue states. This can lead to elevated false negative diagnosis. ...

Thanks, the opening paragraph only states that multiple personalities be involved in the story line. They can be both real or faked. I will remove the MPD term in the spoiler to avoid any confusion or so not to be misleading.

Sorry, I was a bit unclear. this originally started as a poll about MPD and forgot to remove "Disorder". It is now more about multiple personalities being used to develop an interesting character. As well as, the use of multiple personality as a plot device or plot twist. Plus, the creative vehicles writers use to accomplish this. Multiple personalities in this case can be psychological or be caused by any one of a number different plot devices: software, computer chips, enchanted masks, potions, chemical formulas, etc. or just plain faking it. So, I tried to include lots of options outside the run of the mill, DID.

I thought this would be covered withing the scope of the question: Which movie or television character with literal or figurative multiple personalities is the most multi-facetedly intriguing?

Thanks, I have seen all these movies plus the ones you suggested. I was fuzzy on the details from Shutter Island  and American Psycho, plus the plot summaries were no help. I can understand the weaknesses of the characters you have pointed out. I have removed Patrick Bateman, as a result. Regina Millls and Francis Dolorhyde are both listed on their wikias and wikipedia as multiple personality characters. I added in Bae-S00-Mi, Stanley Ipkiss and Fenton.

Uh, Elliot Anderson in Mr. Robot? My personal favorite, besides maybe Norman Bates in the Psycho prequel Bates Motel. Also, Caitlin Snow (alter ego Killer Frost) in CW's The Flash. The Flash also had an episode with a pretty good AID character named Frankie Kane as well.

urbanemovies,

Sadly, IMDb will not support character based polls after December 5, 2017. Please recreate this poll as an image based poll if you wish for your polls suggestion to still be considered.

The list link on your initial post doesn't work. Looks like you re-did the list but maybe you have to get Dan or Peter to update the list link...?
