In January 2023, Angela Bassett's portrayal of Queen Ramonda, Regent of Wakanda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for the 95th Academy Awards. I added the term real-life, fictional or alleged to the notes to account for Oscar-nominated sovereigns that may be royal claimants to the throne or be a character with an Anastasia-like plot twist. I can't think of any previous Oscar nominees that would fall into either category, but more to anticipate a future Oscar-nominated character scenario.

In reviewing all the options, I am consciously choosing to expand the sovereign scope of this poll to include rulers and co-rulers for the following reasons: 1) the poll is as much about Oscar performances, as it is about a named position held; 2) I am choosing not to endorse a system of ruling which for millennias considered women the choice of last resort; 3) the five consorts listed represent some of the biggest stars of their eras and some of the greatest actors, male or female to ever perform; 4) their real-life consort counterparts wielded incredible power (often more than their husbands) either directly throughout their husband's reign, or through their issues that succeeded them on the throne; 5) lastly they all had historical impacts for the betterment or detriment of the country or the world.
