A country's official, paper currency that is circulated for the transactions involved in acquiring goods and services are called banknotes, paper money or greenbacks. In North American English also called a bill. I think all are synonimus.

@GabrielFox​ I agree bill is much commonly used in the US, I rarely ever hear the term "banknote" used in America. He does have a point about the founding fathers, there were more than two and the two categories you are speaking of overlap. Also, favourite is correct,  although "favorite" is the prefered term in North American English.
