Poll Suggestion: It Happens to Men, Too!

Sexual assault is an act of violence of the ugliest and most brutal form where the majority of victims are women; and in that case, movies generally show and treat the issue with seriousness and gravity.

However, male rape is often treated either as a joke or a punchline to a sexual gag, conveying the general misconception that men are the predators and strong enough not to be the victims; this poll is about the movies that treated the issue as a no-joke.

Which film features the most disturbing male rape (or attempted rape) scene?

I know you're focusing on feature films, but if you choose to expand the criteria, the TV Series Oz has many, many disturbing instances of male rape.

That's what I noticed when I was making the list... I think I might make a mix given how undertreated the subject is.

Of those mentioned: Deliverance!

ElMo,

Thank you for suggesting this poll and writing a very sensitive intro and question.

I hope we collectively can find more than the six films you currently includes in your poll. I suspect that this may be difficult given the grave and uncomfortable nature of sexual assault in general and male rape in specific.

By the same token, I hope that finding additional choices doesn't take too long. Please indicate when you consider the poll ready.

Okay Dan, I'll tell you when it's ready... I thought of this poll because I've noticed more than often how lightly male rape (especially prison rape) is treated. Many times you have a cop telling a suspect what awaits him if he goes to jail and has a big and burly cellmate... Nothing wrong with dark humor but it makes you think when even a harrowing and shocking film like "Deliverance" became a Pop Culture joke.

Any other films that deal with the subject? Attempted assaults count, too.
Thanks

Do you intend to have only adults or also child rape?

Good question but I didn't have underage cases in mind. You were thinking of "Sleepers", right?

Mystic River actually

Oh yes.
The poll is about the on-screen instances of male rapes... the cases you were thinking of could only be portrayed as hidden traumas.

Well, there are many movies in which a child is raped. In some rare cases, it is depicted on-screen, almost never shot in quite the same way as when an adult is the victim. Interestingly, it is extremely rare to see a depiction of teenagers being perpetrators of rape or forcible sodomy against a grownup, especially a grown man.

FYC:
The Rape of Richard Beck (1985) - it's a TV movie, but it's a feature nonetheless (many people say it would've been a masterpiece given sufficient theatrical release rather than underrated and half-forgotten) and its is a must for this list. Superb performances throughout and the casual TV movie approach makes the situation all the more jarring and hitting.

And the title is pretty straightforward, too.

Thanks for sharing the clip, Crenna was one of these faces I knew earlier than my favorite actors and my Dad's "kind of films" had a lot to do with it.

This X-Rated movie, Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975). had a lot of male rape. This is a no joke movie and I think it fit the pool.

Boy Erased (2018), the main character was raped in college. It was traumatic.

Ken Park (2002) there is a rape scene when abusive closeted homosexual father attempt to rape his own son. The son later flee from the house.

The Book of Revelation (2006), a group of women abducted a man and do whatever they want.

There is also Mysterious Skin (2004) and Papillon  (2017).

I think the list is ready, if there's a last minute suggestion, I will repush the suggestion.

I see that some of Silitonga's suggestions didn't make the cut. Is there a reason for that? Had I been monitoring this forum when this poll was suggested, I might've suggested 軍雞 and Shank. The problem is that the former is that the relevant scene takes place in what appears to be a reformatory rather than a penitentiary, implying that the character may not be grown even though the actor who portrays him is, and the character is grown, as an ex convict, for most of the picture. (In all fairness, it is not unusual for a youthful convict to arrive in "juvy" a child and still be serving a sentence there into his or her early twenties.) The problem with the latter is the low-production value of the movie overall, almost on par with that of 28 Days Later..., on top of not necessarily having a quality plot. Both the former and the latter are somewhat obscure in terms of publicity or being renown, and there is no point in including items that probably won't receive any votes at all if pushed.

Sleepers (1996). A tragic tale of four boys who get sent to a reformatory and spend their term under the care of a depraved guard.

The victims were underaged kids, not men. It doesn't fit the criteria, sorry.

If there would be a list of movies about boys abused in such a manner, the list would be potentially be well in excess of 35 items, unless maybe it strictly accounted for cases in which physical force, a deadly weapon or a drug is applied by the perpetrator, rather than extortion, prostitution, grooming or charm (the taking of advantage of a faithful admirer).

What a thoughtful and well-written intro! The poll is well done and handles sensitively all around. Bravo.

All of these scenes were so disturbing so it's tough to choose just one but probably Deliverance.
