Poll Suggestion: Director You'd Choose to Document Your Life Story

As soon as I saw that you made a comment I was like "crap I forgot to make it public". Fixed :). That's amazing, what is your film about?!

Man, it would have been interesting to see David Cronenberg making a documentary about me. Although I'm quite down his alley in terms of fiction/semi-fiction as well. :) 

Actually, as for FYC, I'd rather choose great Soviet and Ukrainian documentary director Anatoliy Borsiuk. I should definitely expand his filmography in the near future (it's much larger then what is on IMDb nowadays). Met him twice on VINNYCiAn Film Festival in 2015 and then this year (virtually a week ago). The man is a legend and is a great interlocutor. 

Well... Technically the movie is about communal flat, a type of flat which has numerous people living in it in separate rooms with shared bathroom and kitchen. Plot-wise as main bulk of writing was done when I was still in high school (2007-2009; I can't tell you how much present me would have kicked myself for some of the writing decisions which we now mostly fix on the spot) it is a mess of every imaginable genre: comedy, drama, sci-fi, horror (specifically a slasher-like subplot), action... It's absurdly all over the place, considering it mainly takes place in one flat. It has three main protagonists, for instance. 

Production-wise it's a nightmare: I've specifically chose one simple location as main backdrop and that decision continues to hit me in the had since we've lost the ability to film in that location (thanks to a war conflict in the area, no less). Many actors while moderately enthusiastic are available for shoots and re-shoots like once a year and basically every single failure that could have happened to production already happened. We've got to a point that most of the actors are doubled in some shots despite they themselve also double for someone in others. 

I really hope to have a symbolic screening of at least 90%-ready cut somewhere in December, but that's an optimistic perspective. :)    

That's great, I love when as many genres are mashed together as possible. I wish you the best of luck getting over all the hurdles, navigating around unexpected issues is a large part of what being a good filmmaker is about. Do you have any quotes or info on Anatoliy that might give people who dont him an idea of who he is?

groovyvic, I hope to add some photographs of him through Title Scoreacard as well as expanding his directorial filmography, which is much more then what we see on IMDb now. 

As for quotes... I've searched through numerous interviews for something and decided on this, taken from this interview:
"Documentary is a an immortal genre, as it follows the events, sometimes preceeds them. When it goes calm then some artistic generalization becomes possible, but we are the troops, always forward. We leave shape and facts of event for them".

I added the info that I can for now, unfortunately I can't see anything on his IMDB pro page without getting a free trial.  And you should definitely add to his filmography, it's odd that no one added him as a director to his other films.  What is your IMDB name/link for the "suggested by" part?

There is nothing on the IMDbPro version of the IMDb page for Anatoliy Borsiuk. He is ranked within the top million, complements of a recent surge.

I had a feeling you confused biopic with documentary, although those intervene and technically both narrative semi-fiction and documentary could be biographical. 

Documentaries, though, are mostly non-fictionalized. They might have some reenactments, but mostly tell the stroy through documented or archive footage, interviews and so on. 

I agree - should be biopic.

Cronenberg directed documentaries rather early in his career. 

Oh & for clarification, they don't necessarily need to have past experience directing documentaries/biographies. Anyone who has directed a wide range of genres or exhibits versatility in their work could conceivably be up to the challenge of creating a good biopic, but you could really choose anyone whose style you appreciate or whose views align with yours. I wanted to put Clive Barker because of his background as an author and way with words, as well as the deeper messages contained in his film Nightbreed (1990), which show that he's much more than just someone who does horror..but he didn't have enough films under his belt as a director to justify his inclusion.

A Dangerous Method (2011) is a biography directed by Cronenberg about influential psychologists in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Ridley Scott has many biographies/partially biographical movies including All the Money in the World (2017) and American Gangster (2007), but I chose him because I felt that Blade Runner showed his complex understanding of the human condition and contained many profound quotes, so if he made a movie about me it'd probably be deep and dig beneath the surface of my life.

Right, but I don't know how skilled they are at directing documentaries. I've seen the some of the biopics they've directed and found them to be satisfactory, yet I don't know how accurate they are.

Well, you still need a direction to find the place where directions can be useless...
