Poll Sug: Western character actors: who was the best or most colorful?

The title says it all. This about movie westerns. The list is at http://www.imdb.com/list/ls064875226/... (seeing John McIntire playing the Judge in "Rooster Cogburn" and seeing Strother Martin in it too (he played the horse trade in "True Grit" but he comes back to play the ferry attendee in RC) is what inspired this list.

hey dg...love this list!!!...

you really did your homework...love the addition of kathleen freeman...such a wonderful actress...

when i first read your question, my mind immediately went to jack elam, who you thankfully have on your list...

of course, strother martin was clearly my second thought...

one on your list, eli wallach, kinda seems to me to be 'above' that of a character actor listing, perhaps because he's just been in so many different things as a great supporting actor, even though he does certainly qualify for your list...

one other however, lee marvin, to me was always on the top shelf...maybe not clint or john wayne, but more on par with someone like james coburn...a leading man nonetheless...

but again...excellent job...

I just made this list better with four more. You will be surprised at what non-western film the actor who later played Festus on Gunsmoke is in uncredited and what he is doing in that film.

Are you going to do descriptions for all of the actors? It's kind of unbalanced how there's a huge description for Lee Marvin and smaller notes for a few but then nothing for most...?

FYC:
Michael Parks -  Stranger on the Run, The Last Hard Men, Royce, The Return of Josey Wales, Billy the Kid, From Dusk Till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter, Bullfighter ,Miracle at Sage Creek, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Three Priests, Django Unchained
Katy Jurado - High Noon, One-Eyed Jacks, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, Smoky, The Hi-Lo Country, Arrowhead, Broken Lance, Stay Away, Joe, The Badlanders, Man from Del Rio
Walter Huston -  The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Duel in the Sun, The Outlaw, The Furies, Of Human Hearts, The Virginian, Law and Order, The Bad Man

The reason for Lee Marvin is that he had famous image of the tough guy. It would be hard to remember that he has these offbeat roles where he played against type.
The rest are pretty famous. But yes I would like to post a list of a few representative title films.

A bit of text under the title would really help you here. Just something like this:

This list was inspired by seeing John McIntire playing the judge in "Rooster Cogburn" and then seeing Strother Martin in it too as the ferry attendee. Of all of these character actors in Westerns, who was the best or most colorful?

The title could just be "Western Character Actors".
