Live Poll: The Female Detective

The role of the female detective in film and television has developed over many years. Female cops, agents and investigators are more common on screen, but they must often deal with a male-dominated law-enforcement environment (and criminals, too!)

Which of these essential female detective figures is your favorite?

Clarice Starling.

The Silence of the Lambs was a heart-stopping movie except for one major issue. Clarice Starling was an exceptional FBI rookie. As such, she never would have been so stupid as to have gone to a suspect's house alone as she did near the end of the movie. That so confounded me that the entire movie descended into comic opera for me.

hey peter...

my favorite from your list is jane rizzoli...love marple too, but not margaret rutherford who you have pictured...my favorite marple is geraldine mcewan...

but i always most appreciate the females who can kick butt and got your back...most times casting directors pick someone like meg ryan or melanie griffith who don't inspire confidence when taking down drug dealers and such...tv recently experienced that with bishop on 'ncis' and brody on 'ncis:new orleans'...and did anybody ever have the slightest confidence in beckett on 'castle'...just saying...

anyway...(you can see i have an issue with this subject)...but on that note... i also appreciate a  few not on your list, like fern sutherland who plays kristen sims on 'the brokenwood mysteries'...also  tamsin outhwaite who played sasha miller on 'new tricks'...sonja sohn who played sam baker on 'body of proof'...and of course diana rigg who played emma peel on 'the avengers'...any one of those ladies i would feel comfortable with being my partner...most of the ones on your list...not so much...

but still love the idea...gets ya' thinkin'...

Just to let you know, rocky, I haven't added the names you mentioned since I'm not sure they are prominent enough to be competitive. Perhaps there is basis for other polls, such as one about comic adventure shows like Avengers or Charlie's Angels.

Oh well, I included Emma Peel anyway since two of you mentioned her.

I see this is an old and fairly inactive thread but Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries Phryne Fisher is my favorite. Honey West was a favorite too. Phryne Fisher has a cult-like following similar to Veronica Mars

Add one more vote for Miss Fisher. I think of her as eventually becoming Emma Peel's Grandmother, or at least a beloved auntie, who strongly influenced her development and life choices.

'So many great characters like Tennyson and Cagney & Lacey but the list has two of my all-time favorite characters in any line of work: Deb (from "Dexter") and Clarice. I started a poll like this a while ago but, yikes, forgot about it, so I'm so glad you did this one. 'Great list:  Most of these women are so smart, strong, and able that they'd easily give anyone with issues a thing or two to learn just by doing their thing.

Oh, I just noticed that you have Stella from "The Fall" and Sarah from 'The Killing" on the list; Bravo.

From your current list, Veronica Mars.

It seems like you should add Dr. Isles to Jane Rizzoli - they work very closely together.

You have three movie characters and 27 TV characters. I suggest you drop the movie people and just concentrate on tv people - there are enough movie people to make a whole other poll by itself.

FYC (in order of my choice):
Olivia Dunham - Fringe ***** the best!
Joan Watson - Elementary
Vivian Johnson - Without a Trace
Alex Eames - Law & Order: CI
Molly Solverson - Fargo
Allison Dubois - Medium
Emma Peel - The Avengers
Jessica Jones
Ziva and Abby - NCIS
Christie Love - Get Christie Love!

Not many important ones in movies (who would be competitive), I thought.

A few are both TV and movies, notably Miss Marple.

If I had suggested a poll on movie characters, you might have said it was too predictable.

I included some of your suggestions. Christie Love is just too obscure, sorry.

Two that I considered adding are Grace Hart from Miss Congeniality (although it's a comedy) and Lisbeth Salander (although I don't really think of her as a detective). Would any of you miss them?

Out of those two I'd add Gracie before Lisbeth. But if you were interested you could do one on lady FBI agents... :)

Live Poll: http://www.imdb.com/poll/a1TbgjjJOQU/?ref_=po_fp.  What I'm thinking of is that emoticon that you used to always use when you let someone know that a poll went live. I have such fond memories of that little clapping person - I actually miss an emoticon, lol.

Peter?  You might get some (literal minded) slack regarding the title and question in terms of using detective and the fact that many on the list aren't detectives in title sake.

The FBI agents on the list are examples of that.  Detectives are titles given to certain ranking police as well as civilian consultants who take on the mantle of PI (private investigators) such as Jessica Jones.

Slack? Cut me some!

You're the first to mention it, but I don't find the distinction important. It's more about the role than about a specific job title. Would you know, in some countries the police doesn't even use the title detective.
