Live Poll: The Female Detective
The role of the female detective in film and television has developed over many years. Female cops, agents and investigators are more common on screen, but they must often deal with a male-dominated law-enforcement environment (and criminals, too!)
Which of these essential female detective figures is your favorite?

my favorite from your list is jane rizzoli...love marple too, but not margaret rutherford who you have pictured...my favorite marple is geraldine mcewan...
but i always most appreciate the females who can kick butt and got your back...most times casting directors pick someone like meg ryan or melanie griffith who don't inspire confidence when taking down drug dealers and such...tv recently experienced that with bishop on 'ncis' and brody on 'ncis:new orleans'...and did anybody ever have the slightest confidence in beckett on 'castle'...just saying...
anyway...(you can see i have an issue with this subject)...but on that note... i also appreciate a few not on your list, like fern sutherland who plays kristen sims on 'the brokenwood mysteries'...also tamsin outhwaite who played sasha miller on 'new tricks'...sonja sohn who played sam baker on 'body of proof'...and of course diana rigg who played emma peel on 'the avengers'...any one of those ladies i would feel comfortable with being my partner...most of the ones on your list...not so much...
but still love the idea...gets ya' thinkin'...

It seems like you should add Dr. Isles to Jane Rizzoli - they work very closely together.
You have three movie characters and 27 TV characters. I suggest you drop the movie people and just concentrate on tv people - there are enough movie people to make a whole other poll by itself.
FYC (in order of my choice):
Olivia Dunham - Fringe ***** the best!
Joan Watson - Elementary
Vivian Johnson - Without a Trace
Alex Eames - Law & Order: CI
Molly Solverson - Fargo
Allison Dubois - Medium
Emma Peel - The Avengers
Jessica Jones
Ziva and Abby - NCIS
Christie Love - Get Christie Love!

Peter? You might get some (literal minded) slack regarding the title and question in terms of using detective and the fact that many on the list aren't detectives in title sake.
The FBI agents on the list are examples of that. Detectives are titles given to certain ranking police as well as civilian consultants who take on the mantle of PI (private investigators) such as Jessica Jones.

While I was surprised to see Jane Marple among the choices, she is more of a book character than a film character, she is an interesting character. Agatha Christie made her observation skills and her somewhat cynical insight into human nature her main weapons. She recognizes traits and behaviors she has seen before. The main problem is that she is an amateur detective, frequently does not have the support of the local authorities, and has a few vigilante tendencies. She picks her own cases for example, and in "Nemesis" actually got into a physical fight with the killer.

I thought I would replace the two options who didn't receive any votes in the original poll. Any requests for additions?

Agatha Christie had a husband and wife team of Tommy and Tuppence Beresford that were feature in a few movies and were featured in the series Partners In Crime which showed more than one of their stories. Also using the same title but different decade: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080336/?... and The Secret Andversary
Also look for movies based on Tami Hoag stories or Mary Higgins Clark stories.
Two good ones from Tami Hoag : "Night Sins" and "Guilty As Sin" which both feature female detectives.
