Live Poll: Rock Bands That Have Lasted Over 30 Years

Dedicated to my all-time favorite band, who captured a vision and turned it into a dream.

The following bands have since their formation lasted more than thirty years. Some bands took time apart and were reunited, while others kept going continuously. Many have struggled through tough breaks and setbacks; members have come and gone; but they never lost sight of what they believed in, and so they held the dreams within their hearts, always remaining true to themselves along the way.

Which of these rock* bands that have lasted over thirty years is your favorite? Or, which one would you most like to discover?

*including subgenres progressive metal, progressive rock, heavy metal and hard rock

Journey, hands down!  All the members are talented, but it really rides on Steve Perry's voice.  He is THE BEST singer I've ever heard.  :)  Too bad he's not with them anymore, but he still does great solo.

Please consider including Helloween - formed in 1984 and still going strong!

love this question...love this poll...love your list...and the fact that uriah heep is on there makes it perfect...

just two comments...one...journey is listed as a hard rock band when they are not even rock...they are a pop band at best but certainly worth listing...

the second thing is more difficult...genesis...you say in your intro 'they never lost sight of what they believe in'...so...does that mean you are refferring to the brilliant peter gabriel led genesis...or the crappy phil collins commercial led genesis...they are two very different bands...

Jessica, great poll!
However, one replacement says for itself.

In the initial list, all "Big Three" pioneers of the progressive metal are included, and there is no one band for punk rock.  I suggest The Cure instead of Fates Warning (#8).

And it would be really great to find a room for this unique rock band:
Red Hot Chili Peppers
I think they need no introductions )))
Moreover, they do deserve -- look at their soundtracks list (even if not complete).

Thanks

A powerhouse list with almost too much great music in it!

I'd say that it probably lacks Mashina Vremeni (formed 1969), The Residents (formed 1969), Yello (formed 1979), Depeche Mode (formed 1980), Front Line Assembly (formed 1986), Blue Man Group (formed 1986) and a few more... but there's literally nowhere tto fit them on the list already. Potential for a Part 2?..

On a mostly unrelated note: my own band, Errors in Geography, sort of exists for 11 years already... It basically formed with me and my close friend in 2008 and since almost evolved into a very odd collective, which never have been in the same room fully (although all members know each other), working from distance... Our main achievement so far is a video album, although we plan to release a few proper albums this year, as well... Sorry for the plug. It's just that I can't believe we still exist in 2019 and even produce new music. Oh, and we are actually named for the goof type on IMDb! :)

The Rolling Stones or U2. It will be very hard for me to choose. : )

FYC:

My favorite band, REM (solid 31 years before retiring, although they still play together occasionally  and they're doing a concert in the UK in July)

It's a dilemma for me to choose any of these bands, I love them for the most part, but the strong contenders for me would be
AC/DC
Pink Floyd
Black Sabbath
But I think I would stick with the first

Hi Jessica! This may be a stupid question and I may have overlooked it, but: "dedicated to my all-time favorite band" - which band?

If the Moody Blues, REM, & Genesis make the list of "rock" bands, where's Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, & the Bee Gees?

Scorpions for me. "Rock you like a Hurricane", "The Game of Life", and "Send Me an Angel" are among the most powerful songs I have ever heard.

The Queen and Pink Floyd are longtime favorites for me, though I don't love all of their songs. Iron Maiden is the band that turned me into a metal fan in my teen years, but I love their often thoughtful lyrics much more than their vocal performances.

I like a hand-full of songs from most of the other bands listed, though R.E.M. is among the few American bands that I take seriously. I loved "Bad Day" and their satirical take on the "Teflon whitewashed presidency" of Ronald Reagan. And I found "Everybody Hurts" to be a good reminder that you are not the only person with problems, and that you are not alone in feeling that (as the lyrics go): "Sometimes everything is wrong".
