Live Poll: Movies That Lived up to the Hype

These films had high expectations, either through intense publicity or promotion, and they somehow lived up to all of the hype surrounding them. Maybe it was the beginning of an anticipated franchise or a highly awaited sequel... either way, audiences were blown away and generally satisfied.

Which of these movies that lived up to the hype is your favorite?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls024981306/

Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/OKP-8TAYEF0/

(Please note: In order to qualify for this list, eligible films must have a minimum of 8.0 IMDb Rating and 300,000 votes.)

In my humble opinion, all except Interstellar lived up to the respective hype. To be fair, I don't know the level of the hype associated with each item of the list, since I try to ignore publicity of popular new releases. I don't even remember what the advertising for Aliens was like.

Jeorj,

That's fair - something publicity can skew our perceptions as well and mislead our expectations going into it.

I don't either, but I imagine the hype following the first one (a groundbreaking entry in horror) must've been immense.

T2 or Aliens, mostly T2. The film reinvented the notion of special effects and multiplied by ten our demands in terms of special effects, I'll never forget the effect the film had on us when we first watched it.

And the most incomprehensible case for me is Inception... I'm not saying the film wasn't good but if you remove the 'layers-structure' device, one or two 'wow-this-looks-great-on-the-big-screen' moments and a few creative bits within the editing, the story is rather bland and didn't leave many parts that could be considered as iconic moments in the history of cinema. At least "Interstellar" had that beautiful crying moment, I could swear Di Caprio kept the same expression in his face all throughout the film... and well, nothing against Ellen Page, but she looked so ridiculous in that suit jacket I couldn't take her seriously. For me, the film is like a beautifully constructed building but with prefab empty apartment in each floor.

I'd agree that T2 is one that accomplished so much for a sequel; truly was groundbreaking... hope it doesn't get lost with all of these other gems in the voting.

I think I had known for a while you weren't a huge fan of Inception (2010) but I think there are plenty of iconic moments (The ending, specifically, is arguably the single most iconic moment in any Nolan film). I agree that perhaps some of the characters are lost in the memory after a viewing but I think he accomplished so much in the narrative; with his trademark themes of identity, sense of time and non-linear telling, I really think he perfected it.

And as always, nice metaphor at the end there :D

I think I have to watch the film again, but what disappointed me was how familiar the dream-dimensions were to someone who's used to watch action picture.

The most spectacular part was the gravity-defying fight but that wasn't revolutionary in a post-"Matrix" era. The other worlds consisted on a rainy urban landscape, snowy mountains, it's not exactly how you picture a dream, but that's because Nolan is such a perfectionist he needs to have the control on everything, but dreams are too archaic and random to be defined by something as structured and organized than a script or a plot or a mission. I understand that was the only way to make the film work, Nolan is no Tim Burton but I wish he got closer to Lynch' "Mulholland Dr.".

That's why Nolan did a better job with "Interstellar", you can't cheat with the laws of physics, it's structured, predictable (almost) and rigorous.

Two things about "Inception"'s ending, sure it creates a 'wow' effect but it's not like that last shot depended on all the sequences that went before, any other script with totally different setting could have used that same ending... :)

Well, the physics of Interstellar are more accurate than that of Gravity, so I hope I'm not jinxing anything by mentioning Gravity, which isn't on the list and doesn't belong the list. Interstellar is predictable, maybe "almost" but maybe not "almost", as no part of the ending was entirely unexpected, no part for perhaps people who've watched a sufficient amount of Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation, as well as, say, Donnie Darko, Twelve Monkeys and a little-known film called Millennium (starring Kris Kristofferson), along with Nolan's other work, given his notoriety for bitter sweet elements. I hope I'm not giving too much away for people who've yet to see Interstellar.

One of a number of things makes Inception special or at least interesting. Marion Cotillard's role is one of the essential elements. We know that Christopher Nolan has (or the Nolan brothers have) a penchant for the theme of the "grieving widower" protagonist (or man grieving loss of girlfriend/babymama), but he (they) took it to a different level with Inception.

Well, she was more convincing than Ellen Page with that jacket suit... but for me, it takes two to play the emotional tango, Cotillard was good, I didn't think much of Leo.

Avengers. I though the first Transformers lived up to the hype...before it went full Michael Bay.

Avengers is a solid pick; being the first legit crossover film, it certainly had a lot of expectations riding it. Thanks for the vote!

I believe the idea of 'hype' to be a recent phenomena, but I may be wrong. As for movies that met my expectations and beyond, I have to say Mad Max: Fury Road (even though I was a bit concerned of Mel not being Max, I knew George Miller's direction would be fantastic) and Guardians of the Galaxy (yes I did actually think the movie looked amazing before it came out)

I don't think a film could possibly live up to the amount of hype they get these days. By the time gets released you've already had 8 months of teasers, trailers, clips, and reviews, each giving away a little more each time. Most recent comedies show the only funny parts of the film in the trailers. It's like trying to get an unbiased jury in a case that's in the news every day for months.
