Live Poll: Most Surprising Food Advertising Trick

Food featured on T.V. in commercials is meant to make our mouth water and get us to drive to the restaurant to purchase the product. Most of the time, it works. But getting the perfect picture of a burger, bowl of cereal, or soda is harder than you'd think. Here's some of the tricks used by photographers to achieve a great ad - and some of them are really weird. Which one do you find the most shocking?

That was indeed funny. While considering searching Google Images for some nice ice cube pic, I was reminded of that ad campaign for Suntory Whisky, featuring small ice sculptures. Though not what you want, it's definitely worth a look if you've not seen it, and relevant to your poll too, except still pictures, not moving.

Now that I understand that you need an IMDb media image, it sounds like a lot of fun to find pictures. My first, not-very-inspired thought was this (here's its counterpart). Please excuse me, I guess for the second time in this post I managed to miss the point. Here's the pic anyway, since I like it.

I find it rather unnerving that Soylent is being advertised as part of your poll. Every time I see the ad, I have a hard time not thinking of Soylent Green (1973).

This is so good! I knew a few of them but didn't know about others like soapy water in milk and lipstick on strawberries, lol. I really like the text you wrote for each one, as well as the images you chose. 

Oh, may I suggest one small edit to the first line of the intro? (edit in bold)

Great idea and lovely subject! I love commercials special effects trivia. 

My only complaint is that we can't illustrate that with actual commercials, as these are scarce on IMDb so far as they only became eligible recently. But I'm adding them, if slowly and I'm not the only one who's doing that, so that's a point for the future. I guess at some point there'll be enough to make a poll fully comprised of commercials, perhaps ones directed by famous directors. ;)

I love watching older commercials, preferably ones from the 70's-80's-90's.  They can be very cheesy (but of course I like that stuff) but they are also a lot more fun and upbeat that ads now.  :)

NarniaisAwesome, one of my passionate hobbies these days is to watch and research old commercials and "incidental television" as I like to call it (random crap recorded on VHS). Not only is this a great way to educate yourself on variety of subjects and immerse into atmosphere completely, there's also the astounding amount of coincidences between year and it's 30-years-old counterpart. For example this year shares more then a passing resemblance with 1989. Even some fonts and styles used back then are pretty much back. :)

Yep, the 80's are kinda making a comeback!  I think maybe Stranger Things might have a little something to do with it, but anyway it's nice.  I don't think it's good to idolize any decade, because no time is perfect... but the 80's are awesome!

NarniaisAwesome, I wanted to say that 80's are almost finished with their comeback, but if 2020's are the next 90's then there's another fact: up until 1994 or something like that 90's looked very much like 80's anyway. :) Of course, we're not in the area of anything clearly defined here, so who knows, really. Some things that came back succesfully in the 2010's were from the 90's...

Great, thanks.  Now I'm glued to it!  "We've come too far to leave it all behind."  It's also nice to know that Ice Manufacturing is still a family oriented business, not corrupted by immorality.  :)  It's weirdly neat to see what other people are doing and advertising.  :D  Infomercials also delight me to no end.  ;)  Stupid people advertising (mostly) stupid products.  Gets me every time when people can't even crack an egg or fetch a towel without making their house collapse around them.

And I didn't know Rose Marie had a store!  ;)

I wonder if the goofs that use engine oil in lieu of maple syrup properly dispose of the pancakes as it's illegal to throw engine oil in into the regular trash. And you now can't compost the pancake remains either.
