Here's my first toss at a poll, so I'm welcoming all advice.

Since all of them are from the TV it might be a good idea to rename it Most Iconic TV Director.

Ottherwise a great first stab at a poll!

Ed Jones (XLIX) I noticed that although now it's too late to correct since you pointed out. Oh well. :)

I knew what was meant. I detected it.
One thing I can't find out how to do is to hide the link off the list page within a word or two so have the whole link back to here. Can some1 point me to the directions. I've looked at how to make a poll but don't see it.

Nash had a partner. I purposely excluded anyone with a partner unless it was very sporadic. Otherwise there would be a lot more.
And Crockett had Tubbs.

Have to admit it's been a long time since watched Kojak. I couldn't recall if his partners were with him most of the time. If that's the case I'll take him out.

lol. I'll add him back. I hadn't include Robert Blake frankly because of what happened to his wife which is a PC reason, but I've added him.
On the Columbo pic, I wanted one with his raincoat and cigar which were two of his trademarks.

Ed you're so demanding :) I changed to a different one, but I'll look for yours to pop up.
I also added Barnaby Jones. I originally excluded him because my best recollection was that he was helped out quite a bit although I'm not sure I'd say he had a "partner". Magnum for example, used TJ, Mac, and Orville regularly which is why I excluded him and his mustache.

I'll have to ponder a little on magnum because of the partner thing. I'll scan episodes and see how many I can recall was him alone vs getting help.
I LOVED Mick. I don't think he fits though as I was trying to go for detectives that went thru the process and I don't think he fits but I'll ponder that as well.
I'm worried about expanding too much which then would open up too many new entries.

Haven't you forgotten Sherlock Holmes? Either played by Jeremy Brett or Benedict Cumberbatch

I'm a big Holmes fan, but he had Watson. I intentionally want to limit it to those detectives that didn't have partners. Unfortunately Holmes did.

TY. never watched it and never seen him beyond Murder on the Orient Express.

Definitely not to overlook - in my opinion one of the best 'Poirots' is David Suchet

Didn't realize there was a Poirot series. thx. Holmes unfortunately had Watson so he's not eligible.

I've made a few revisions. Reading the faq I'm supposed to watch for too many options.  So in the light, are there any that you think should be removed, or am I missing any.  (I did a search of all polls and found none like this. The closest I found were two that were for British titles, which because of that maybe I should trim those. Thoughts?)

You don't have too many options, but you can stick to American TV if you prefer.

Frost, a policeman, doesn't really work alone either.

Please add a space before the (US) parenthesis in your list title. Or perhaps put it at the end:

Most Iconic TV Detective (US)

I looked at the list of all polls and the few that specify US/UK have it before the poll's subject.
So I changed it to "Most Iconic US TV Detective".
How's that?

I'm limiting the titles to US TV.  There have been at least two polls that were just for British detectives.

Great first poll!  I love how you include a lot of oldies.  :)
My pick: Jessica Fletcher
Suggestions:
Adrian Monk
House

Unfort monk is after the time period as I wanted to cut at 2000 and monk started in 2002. When I  looked at when to cut it off, if I let it past 2000 there would be a lot more and there are 20 as it is.
House although based on Holmes, does not solve crime.

Oh, that's okay!  I think it's great how you're doing it for older, classic TV!  Perhaps you should specify that in the title or description.  Lots of polls now only focus on new crime shows.

Great point. Any suggestion as how to name it?
Maybe something like
"Most Iconic pre-2000 US TV Detective"

MikeTheWhistle,

Welcome to poll making.

My vote:
This is Jim Rockford. At the tone leave your name and message, I'll get back to you.

FYI: Tom Selleck made his detective debut on The Rockford Files. He played a squeaky clean by-the book detective, a studied and at times infuriating contrast to Rockford.

Yes, Lance White.

unfortunately Richie Brockleman Private Eye only lasted 5 ep when I'm restricting my list to having lasted at least 2 seasons.

Have to admit I don't think I ever saw Selleck on Rockford. Have to see if either ep is upcoming.

Oh MAN, this is a TOUGH poll... I don't think I can choose just one.  Columbo, James Rockford, Kojak, Cannon, even Quincy and Mrs. Fletcher... all are part of American TV lore!

The poll should've also included Chief Ironside (Raymond Burr) and Petrocelli (Barry Newman).

To this day my wife and I still watch Columbo episodes as we find Peter Fauk's mastery of this character is timelessly entertaining!!!!

....."ahhhh...excuse me ....just one more thing...I almost forgot", hats off to the writers too...brilliant!
