Live Poll: Most Bizarre Movie Mothers :D

In some movies the role of a bizarre mother-character is a special element of storytelling. Sometimes an actress does such an awesome performance as a bizarre mum, that the mothers bizarreness becomes a fundamental element of the story.

Who of these memorable characters below do you think is the most bizarre mother by acting strange and/or freaking out on screen?

(Only movies with a rating of 7.5/10 or higher, with one exception: down to a rating of 7/10 when the character is outstanding and memorable for more than 20 years.)

I shortened it. When an actress had 2 movies, I put 2 Movies on one thumbnail.
Is it better to have the actresses mommy-movies separeted?

Hi, ACT_1.
It's about actresses performances. This Lady seems to be a little old. ;)
I wonder, if i should take Norman in the list, because he is also his mother
in a bizarre way. Let me sleep on, I will think of it, tomorrow. Thank you
for the interesting suggestion. :D

(It feels a little strange, to list Anthony Perkins as an actress).
There may be a few opinions, I'll wait for it/them. :)

FYC:

Angela Lansbury in The Manchurian Candidate (1962)
Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest (1981) - I haven't seen it but the movie is notorious for having a crazy mother

It's nice to have more ponts. I will consider that. These are really good actresses.
I know the manchurian with Liev Schreiber. I think Streep wasn't bizzare, more a kind of greedy, powerthirsty and unscroupulus bloodsucker. ... in this movie, of course. ;) 'Mommie Dearest' sounds more interessting. I will read about it. :)

It's been years since I saw The Manchurian Candidate but there's a helpful website that claims the following:

-Eleanor is demeaning and controlling to her son, using him as a prop to build up her husband's political career and forcing him to break up with the woman he loves. When it's revealed she's also his hypnotic controller, she even orders him to kill the woman he loves, and in the book has sex with him while he's under a trance.

-Part of Ellie Iselin's Freudian Excuse is that she was repeatedly raped by her father as a child. Late in the story, she has sex with Raymond while he's brainwashed (though this is only implied in the film versions).

So maybe her bizarreness is a little subtle.

By the way, do you consider Allison Janney's role in American Beauty (1999) to be bizarre?

Oh yes! You can call the character 'white trash'. But I think, she really is a little bizzare about how she treated her daughter, even when she only was four. The thing with the knife and how she treats other people outside the 'family' seems to be really fishy. About 'The Manchurian Candiate':

I concentrate on the movies not on the books. That's because people who only saw the movie have not the view like people who read the book, too. But the thing with hypnotic controll she uses maybe considerable for me. I see, rubyfruit76 did a lot of mother-suggestions. I guess I'll take the best bizzare mothers all suggesters suggest. So some will be in my list, others not. Thank you for your suggestions. I consider them as - pun intended - candidates. ;)))

Hallo, Albstein.

Breumaster - the 7.0 threshold is a very good idea. About Wendy Torrance - I would agree that she doesn't quite fit (her husband is bizarre, her reactions are "normal" under the extraordinary circumstances).

'Some creepy mothers, indeed. Catherine Keener in 'Get Out' stands out for me, as well as Angela Lansbury in 'The Manchurian Candidate,' and of course Allison Janney in 'I, Tonya.'

I think it would be easier for voters to recall these performances if you switch this to an image poll and use photos of the actors in character. That would requite some tedious work but I think it would pay off. It it helps and you like any of these images...

Anne Ramsey's image is the same but here are some others:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074285/mediaviewer/rm145537536 (there are more obviously horrific photos of her but I chose this because it's eerie and because it would crop better than some of the others)

Ok, I started a new list, containing the characters and picture-links from the movies from IMDb. I guess that's the better way to start the whole thing. So I guess, I will have to start a new poll-suggestion arfterwards? I think the project is good enough to start it in another way. Thank you all for your help. :D :D :D

My Vote: Grace Steward from The Others.

It might be better if you use certain limitations like movies with ratings more than 7 or performances nominated for major awards because there can be lot of FYC's for this.

What does FYC mean?

In my knowledge FYC stands for 'For Your Consideration'.

Basically what i meant was that if you limit your poll then you might have to consider less options for your poll as suggested by other users

I also think there is a difference between "strange and bizarre" and just "abusive and neglectful". Which are you going for? Or for both?

Hello, Jen.
I think more about the complete appearance of these mothers. It's about creepy mental illness, that doesn't have to appear all the time, or using twisted, sick methods - but not directly abuse. Abuse of some kind is in nearly every bad-mother-movie.

I could put there a picture of 'Precious'. But the incestuos abuse of girls is used often - then I had to add 10 more films. Mothers in movies like 'Precious' are not so special, that I would put them to this list. The mothers for the list should have a special unique position feature in mind or body.

I know at the moment, there are three Mothers who do not fit perfectly for this mother-list. I struggle myself by the question of giving them away or not:
Wendy Torrance, Mother Gothel & LaVona.

LaVona is deranged and abusive. But if there wasn't the thing with the knife and her dissing of her 3...4... year old daughter, i wouldn't have put her into the list. Wendy is more kind of deranged, because her husband is mentaly torn - she is not the active part, she is only a victim. The mothers below are active on their own. And Mother Gothel is just a special kind of abuser. Who are  clearly  candidates for the list?

Sarah Goldfarb
Sarah Connor
Momma
Margaret White
Grace Steward
Mel Jones
Mama Fratelli
Joan Crawford
Missy Armitage
Lily Munster
Morticia Addams
Vera Cosgrove
Gertrude Baniszewski

The extract from all of them seems to be mental illness or 'to be dreanged', freaky, kinky not on the rail of normality. :) It's surely more strange & bizarre. Bizarre should stay in the title. I could add 'or Strange' in the title of the list. ;)

Hello, Peter. I guess, I have to watch this movie too. I just don't know how it did escape from my eyes. :D Ok, it's the fact - I must admit: I haven't seen the movie. But It's a David Lynch movie, you're a poll champion, it's near to 7.5/10 and seems to be unforgettable once one has seen it. And there's a pretty sick image of a scene of that movie on IMDb database. So I put the image of the character Marietta Fortune on the list. Thank you for contributing. :D

The image list looks great! I hope that the images I found helped and didn't feel to you like I was trying to take over your poll. You found some wonderful images for the other characters and the list is great.

Oh, if you're interested in this qualifying for consideration to appear on the home page, let me know and I'll tell you the little things you could do that would increase its chances. Or you could wait until you have a few more live polls under your belt. :)

This isn't a big deal but I'd suggest just a few small edits to the following part of the introduction. The suggested edits are in bold just so they're easy to spot:

(Only movies with a rating of 7/10 or higher, with one exception: 6/10 when the character is outstanding and memorable for more than 20 years.)

I erased Wendy Torrance from the list, because each normal woman like her would do what she did in real life, because of the circumstances. I erased Mother Gothel from the list, because she just abuses her daughter for her purpose, but isn't really bizzare or twisted. It's just a kind of magic.
