Poll authors and other members of the IMDb Poll Board have a variety of experience in the films they have seen. This is a list of the first films that IMDb Poll Board users remember seeing in theaters.

Which of these first films do you find most intriguing or unexpected?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls085384599/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/71OuuHBez1w/

Ground Rules
1. Poll authors, other contributors to the IMDb Poll Board, IMDb champions and IMDb employees may contribute to this poll.
2. For the purposes of this poll the first film must be seen in an indoor theater, drive-in theater or during a public performance.
3. Films nominated multiple times will be listed once with all nominators mentioned for that film.
4. Feature films, documentaries and shorts are eligible.
5. Films are not limited to English language films.
6. Each user’s nominated film is their best recollection of the first film they remember seeing.
7. This poll will be considered ready when it reaches 25 choices.

I think it was Ratatouille (2007). It might be the second the third, but I don't remember before Ratatouille (2007).

Silitonga,

I'm surprised, I would have expected your first movie in a theater to be much older than Ratatouille since your account is 10 years old!

cinephile,

I was living outside of the big city when I was a little, so my adventurous side was more like outdoor, nature, rivers, mountains, hiking, etc, I listen to music much but going to theater was not really my thing.

Then my adventurous changed when I went to college in the big city, it was more indoor activities, that was the time I find joy just sitting in the theater or in front of my laptop after stressful college activities, and just watching movies or TVs. That's also the time I found IMDb, I was just 20 yo. Damn! times fly so fast!

I have a clear memory of seeing Straw Dogs (1971) in the summer of 1972 at the local drive-in (my brother (age 4) and I (age 6) were suppose to be asleep in the back of the station wagon). In revisiting the film years later, I am shocked that my parents took us in the first place.

The other possible contender is Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) from likely later in that same summer, seen on a rainy day during our vacation at the beach. Otherwise, another one of the Disney classics that was on the seven year rotating re-release schedule ( it is hard to pin down which one I saw first).

Straw Dogs (1971) is my pick.

My first technical movie was very likely a double feature at the Milford Drive-in. The same situation where I was supposed to be asleep. But I can't fathom which of the movies those were.

I did see Bedknobs and Broomsticks in a special rerelease theatrically ... sometime in the 80s. Hated it as an early to mid-teens (depending on what exact year in the 80s that was).

Really, Milford, N.H. ???? I've been there. I can't believe it is still in biz. I saw Straw Dogs at the Nashua Drive-in, plus made the rounds @Tynsboro too back when it wasn't the Pheasant Lane Mall.

As a wild guess: Escape to Witch Mountain (1975).

Scratch that. I'm going to claim Benji (1974) as my first movie.

I don't remember, but my parents say it was Disney's Cinderella.

I have a faint memory of watching Beauty and the Beast (1990), but I'm not really sure.

The first one I am actually sure of is Aladdin.

Dan,

This was a difficult task.
I will have to go with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I know there were others before that, but oddly enough I can't remember seeing them.

Jessica,

Thanks. I added The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001).

I should have realized that it would be difficult for some / many people to remember the first film that they saw in a theater.

I vividly remember the films I saw in theaters when I was young, since until I went to college it was an infrequent event.

Paok-Kilkis,

Thank you. I added Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002).

Sorry to take so long in adding your first theater film. I did not see your post until a few minutes ago.

Not sure if that demonstrates variety or luck. Despite being more active on the internet and social media, the <18 and the younger portion of the 18-29 aren't as current on IMDb than the older 18-29, the 30-44, and the 45+.

The demographics for poll authors tend to skew younger than active users of IMDb. However, I have no way of verifying this. Col Needham told me he considered the demographics of poll authors and poll takers to be proprietary information for IMDb.

Some of these films could be misleading, though: Like rocky's first was 'Dr.No' but about a year ago, a friend of mine took his 14-year-old son to see 'Dr. No' at a local theater that plays older movie every Wednesday. It was not the first time that his sone saw a movie at a theater but it was the first time he went to a theater to see a movie that wasn't made for kids and the first time that he saw a Bond film. I think the first film I saw in a theater was 'Bambi' but it wasn't in 1942, lol.

The earliest movie I recall seeing in a theater was THEM; giant ants created by mutation due to nuclear bomb testing. It had some top stars at the time: James, Arness, Fess Parker, Edmund Gwenn, James Whitmore, and Joan Weldon. Summer of 1954. I was in second grade!
