I love some of these films, but I was always unnerved by the fact so many people idolize criminals from such movies. From their clothes, to their walk, to their speech patterns... it's like a lot of movie-watchers skip final minutes of the film, where some of those ''cool'' criminals often get their comeuppance.

I think so, too. But at the end these are still only movies and I rely on the consciousness of the people that there is law and they are not really gangsters. ;)

"Consciousness" - what an awfully difficult word for something that is so necessary! The word "Weapon" is easier to speak.

I do not think that these films have been made to romanticize and adore this really deplorable lifestyle, the gangsters are millionaires who live in the mud without peace and without being able to be calm with their families, none of these films ignore these facts, if in some At the moment I was directing a movie about gangsters I would focus on the moral conflicts of these men, after all, cinema has never been a moral compass for people and there are many who do not understand the meaning of these stories that are carried away by the moments of glory and luxuries of gangsters.

That's another way to see it. Scorsese and many other mobster-movie directors also showed up the violence and the ruin of  the families of the mobster characters and the mobsters themselves. I don't believe that anyone goes out and says "Hey! Now I'm gonna be a gangster! Now I know how the cookie crumbles and I can do much better!" That would be awfully ridicoules. Nobody would or could copy these stories in real life.

For your consideration:
A Bronx Tale:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106489/
Cop Land:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118887/

I wonder a little about the terms "epic proportions" and "great scale".
Do you think of running time or complexity or something I missed?

Running time is very critical because it gives the pacing a sprawling feel. A second important aspect is the story's duration. Donnie Brasco & A Bronx Tale aren't really that long but they span through years and decades in the lives of their characters, thus giving these films an epic feel and scale. Complexity is important as well.
