Perhaps add what Oscar the respective film had won to its option's text.

Maybe "hadn't" is better here:

These sequels won an Academy Award when the previous installment(s) hadn't received any nominations.

An impressive bit of Oscar trivia, I think the poll suggestion might benefit from some tweaking and a poll title that crisply describes the impressive feat.

For Your Consideration,

Face-Off: Oscar-Winning Sequels with No Oscars Pedigree

or

Face-Off: Oscar-Winning Sequels with No Oscars History

All these sequels received multiple Academy Award nominations and won an Oscar, when all their previous franchise installment(s) hadn't even received a single Oscar nomination.

Which of these Oscar-winning sequels, whose franchise never had an Oscar nomination before, is your favorite one?

FYC:

Goldfinger won for Best Sound Effects after the first two Bond films, Dr. No and From Russia With Love got no nominations.

@Pencho15, I am not sure about the Goldfinger inclusion, as the other films received three, four and six Oscar wins, as well as, being Oscar-nominated three, six and ten times. I don't think it is in the same class of reversing a prior trend.

Goldfinger's win in a single technical category wasn't as impressive or as astounding a turnaround, as the other films. It only fits the parameters by getting a single win and a single nomination, after being shutout in its two previous installments. I wouldn't be surprised if almost every media franchise took some to find its footing or groove. If the bar is getting a single win (especially in a technical category) to qualify and a film series only has to have two more installments, I think thirty-five options can be found to fill out this answer pool. I think this poll suggestion needs to expand its answer pool beyond five options, if those are only two requirements. Otherwise, it can remain a face-off with a limited selection of only the most impressive turnarounds or Oscar feats after having no history of being even nominated or winning @ the Oscars.

I think some ground rules/parameters are needed here. As it stands now with the three listed face-off films, these are the implied minimum thresholds set, but not explicitly stated. I am not sure if there are other films that meet these thresholds and are not included.

  • Lack of Oscar Pedigree (Bar: single preceding film) these films were second, fourth and third installments in the film series, respectively
  • Oscar Nomination Threshold (Bar: three or more Oscar nominations) they had six, ten and three Oscar nominations, respectively
  • Oscar Win Threshold (Bar: three or more Oscar wins) they had four, six and three Oscar wins, respectively

I think the essence of this face-off is that these films went from being Oscar-poor to Oscar-rich with the flip of a switch or out of nowhere, IMHO.

@urbanemovies As far as I could find, making a IMDb advanced search for sequel Oscar winning films, Goldfinger is the only one missing.

I agree an IMDb search is helpful. But, it is not exhaustive because it is dependent on the following installments being keyword tagged, which they may or may not be. Also, it depends on how you define a sequel. Does it have to be from the same production company, be based on the same characters or story, or do serials (a film broken up into many parts) and shorts (a film of limited length) qualify?

FYC, under the poll's implied parameters, These sequels won an Academy Award when the previous installment(s) hadn't received any nominations. Which is your favorite title?

Batman, Dick Tracy, and Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day all seemingly qualify, but are not tagged as sequels.

Batman 1989 | Movie  7.5 (382,749)
No prior Oscar nominations from any previous installment in the film series featuring this character. WON OSCAR
Dick Tracy 1990 | Movie  6.2 (63,169)
No prior Oscar nominations from any previous installment in the film series featuring this character. WON OSCAR
Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day 1968 | Short 7.9 (5,243)
No prior Oscar nominations from any previous installment in the film series featuring this character. WON OSCAR

@mariojacobs They are without a doubt sequels, because they check all the boxes, no matter how you define a sequel.

Also, it depends on how you define a sequel. Does it have to be from the same production company, be based on the same characters or story, or do serials (a film broken up into many parts) and shorts (a film of limited length) qualify?

Both movies are part of a series made by the same production company, belonging to same franchise, are the same media type, have shared characters and have linked storylines.

My point about the others is it helps to set some parameters, so you prevent these type of questions or entanglements. You always can revise them, if you find you set them incorrectly or as you build your answer pool.

@mariojacobs fyi, you still need to make some decisions here. The easiest is whether or not to incorporate my title and question suggestions. The next is what are your poll parameters to be included in the answer pool. Lastly, who qualifies and who doesn't under those rules. It as easy as 1.2.3. to finish this one off.

Fury Road works better than Valium. I've tried 4 or 5 times, and I fall asleep 25-30 mins into it every time. So boring.
