Live Poll: Face-Off: Joi vs. Luv

In Blade Runner 2049, Denis Villeneuve's sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic, neither of the two female lead characters is human.

Joi is a holographic woman unable to physically interact but very obedient, while Luv is a 'replicant', a sophisticated android virtually identical to a human being but with a tendency towards violence.

Who would you prefer as your companion: Joi or Luv?

Considering what a big fan I am of the original Blade Runner, I can't believe I still haven't seen 2049 yet. I can't vote yet but it seems like a good idea.

While I haven't yet seen the new Blade Runner, this seems like a good poll, but I have a little problem -- or at least a question - about this part of the intro:

Joi is a holographic woman unable to physically interact but very obedient

I get the sense that perhaps obedience is meaningful to the film and not important just for the female characters? The word "obedient" is a loaded word when applied to women, though, so it gives me pause. Are there other traits that she has that you could note instead? That seems like maybe the easier option. Or, if "obedience" is, in fact, vital to the story, could you frame it in a way that lets those who haven't seen the film that, in the context of the film, it's a positive traits for male and female non-humans, as the case may be? It's difficult for me to comment on this, having not seen the film yet, but "obedient" is just so loaded that I'm just wondering if there would be another way to go?

This is indeed a good point, Sara. I used this word intentionally and in a provocative way, because my understanding of the underlying message in Blade Runner 2049 is that mankind has evolved to a point where real (female) partners have often been replaced by "living dolls" - or holographs in this case that will do anything to please the other (not in a sexual way because they're holographs, you cannot touch them). That's why I used the word "obedient", almost as a slave, and I definitely used it in a negative and unhealthy way and not to describe a balanced relationship. Maybe one of you has a better synonym. What about "dutiful"?

Oh, that's really interesting - I wondered if maybe there was something about the movie that, since I haven't seen it, explained the use of that word. It's strange that I haven't seen it, as I'm a big fan of the original Blade Runner, and your explanation makes me want to see it even more.

I wish there was a way to briefly incorporate, into the intro, your understanding of the message of 2049, since it's really insightful and well written. Right now I'm tired and can't seem to do that but if you can, and you like the idea, I think that would be very cool. If not, what about something like this? (edit in bold below) Would that work?

Joi is a holographic woman unable to physically interact but very eager to please, even to the point of being obedient, while Luv is a 'replicant', a sophisticated android virtually identical to a human being but with a tendency towards violence.
