Live Poll: Classic Wartime Movies

Not every war-movie features war-scenes, many of them are essentially focused on the atmosphere, the mood or more simply the war as seen from the civilians' standpoint. This poll is about classic Best Picture Oscar-nominated "battle-less" war movies.

Which of these classic wartime movies is your favorite?

If you going to include “Schindler’s List” on your list, I suspect you are going to include prisoner of war camp and concentration camp movies.
- Stalag 17
- The bridge on the River Kwai
- The Great Escape

Mmmm, maybe for Stalag...
Kwai's climax is definitely a battle scene (though it's not a traditional one but you know what I mean...)
The Great Escape's downer conclusion was a true reminder that war was still going on, we can debate on it...
I'll add Stalag...

FYC:

1. Inglourious Basterds (2009) - Doesn't have any "battle" sequences.

2. The Aviator (2004)

3. Dunkirk
 (2017) - It's not a war/battle film. It's more of a rescue film.

I really meant "battles" in a very loose sense, shootouts and executions are considered war deeds... I will rewrite the intro.

Didn't he shoot that military police officer at the end of 'Casablanca'?

Didn't they execute Ralph Fiennes' character (Amon Goeth) at the end of 'Schindler's List' movie?

Yes but the shooter was a civilian.

Yes but it wasn't during wartime (1946)

Gotcha lol

In-gotcha, ElM, in “Schindler’s List”, Goeth was tried for war crimes and was executed. It was still war related, and it was in a phase of war seldom talked about, “Aftermath” ,where the hostilities are ended but the effects of war still needs to be attended to.

I really like this one.

May I suggest one small edit of punctuation? (a colon or semi-colon instead of a comma)

It's not in the list, but my choice would be Army of Shadows (1969).

It has one scene where the Nazis are shooting at prisoners. Well, not really shooting, but they give them one minute to run to the end of the tunnel, and tell them that the ones lagging behind will be shot. It's not really battle.

From the list, I'd choose Schindler's List.

Just a suggestion, you could also consider one of my all-time favorite comedies, The Secret of Santa Vittoria (1969).

Yet another one is Victory (1981) which features a football match (soccer, for those of you on the other side of the ocean) between a German team and a team of allied prisoners. The Nazis see it as an opportunity for propaganda, while the allied team sees it as a chance to escape.

It's not the best movie out there, and has more goofs than one can count, but it's very, very enjoyable. Plus it was directed by John Huston and features Stallone, Michael Caine, Max Von Sydow, Pele and some of the world's greatest football stars of the era (or ever, from my point of view).
