Live Poll: B&W Films of the 80s

From the 70s onward, with the vast majority of films being shot in color, it has become an artistic and/or stylistic choice to present a film in black and white. More often today it is used to pay homage to films of a bygone era and invoke a sense of nostalgia, but it can also be used to help create a stark, emotionless, unforgiving world onscreen. Which of these 80s films made most effective use of its black and white presentation?

This one is an even better list of films, I think. So good that I can't decide between six or seven, including Confidentially Yours, The Elephant Man, and Raging Bull. Bravo.

I hope Rocky-o sees this; I bet he'd like this list. At least a few other GS board regulars, too.

The only two films that I found on the list that were good enough for my taste were: "The Elephant Man" and "Raging Bull", both premiering in 1980.  The other titles I never heard of, and they just didn't send me.

That's very interesting, dude.  Is that your way of saying, "how do you know if you don't like something if you don't try it?"  That's something we say here in the U.S.  You wouldn't, by any chance, be studying Philosophy in school, would you now?  I'm just asking out of simple curiosity, sir.  I'm not trying to debasing you or anything, you dig?

That's what I thought you meant, and it's a good point.  And if you don't mind my saying this to you, for someone who doesn't study Philosophy, you sound very philosophical.  Unfortunately, some of us peons tend to be like cats, who are somewhat picky about what they like to eat?  Well, I'm that way myself sometimes.  I'm very choosy about the kind of movies or T.V. shows that I want to see.  If a movie or T.V. show has that certain 'Jei Nei Se Qui', or however the words are pronounced to describe how exciting a certain program is, then I'll give it my personal attention.  If it doesn't have any of that, then I won't waste my time with it, simple as that.  So, what do you think, dude, you think I got a good system going here, or do you think that I'm being weird here?  Please be honest with me, okeydokey?  I hate those who beat around the bush, you dig?

Well, my friend, I've never claimed to be a 'Roger Ebert' myself when it comes to picking my favorite films and stuff like that there.  In fact, you might say that I'm more like a 'Howard Cowsell', you know what I'm saying.  Basically, I just "call them as I see them", you dig? And dude, I'm not trying to be funny when I tell you all this, but I'm just trying to explain myself and be honest with you.  Believe me, I don't want you or anyone else on this forum to think that I'm a weirdo or a weisenheimer, or whatever you may think of me after you all read my messages, okey-dokey?

Tetro should be on that list. Most beautiful black and white film I've seen from recent times.
