JFF: What Was the Last Film You Saw, and How Would You Rate It? (Pt. 19)

Simply a follow up to Jen's great post; there were getting to be so many pages in that one I thought it could use a refresh.  Happy to carry on the tradition!

The Queen's Gambit (8/10)

I finally finished it.

Qualities:

Production design

Cinematography

Directing

Screenplay (alcohol loses a bit of its importance in the two last episodes)

Flaws:

Anya Taylor-Joy's performance

The performance isn't good, but the character is good. I almost got duped in the first episodes of the series.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster's performance and character

Supernova (2020) (7/10)

It might be Stanley Tucci's best performance.

The Sinners (2020/2021)

Not nearly as bad as one might think - the plot is decent and the main young actresses are competent.

Direction is clearly amateurish, and editing is literally a hack job.

Profoundly boring; unwatchable to completion.

(2020), 7/10. Has a more appropriate English alternate title of Fail in Love. A miniseries of shorts. 5 episodes from the 13 episodes series about meeting people from online dating apps:

Quick and cheap animation is cheap and ugly but the (possible adaptations of real-life) dating stories are (I can't say relatable as I have no similar dating experience) sympathizable. Strong voice-over/narration ... each a different actor for each new story.
