JFF: Just a random but not uninteresting question...

Last year, I suggested this: https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/poll-suggestion-imdb-poll-board-user-top-10-movies

..; and I got like 15 answers, maybe I can get more Top 10 (I just wish I won't get less)... there's something I'd like to check starting with these Top 10, can you specify (if your memory doesn't fail you), how old you were when you saw these movies for the first time. I'll do the stats later.

So I start:

The Godfather (15)
The Godfather Part II (15)
Goodfellas (22)
Once Upon a Time in America (22)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (23)
Scarface (11)
Rocky (21)
The Graduate (25)
Tootsie (8)
Back to the Future (10)

Age: 36
Average: 17,2
Min-Max: 8-25

My Top 10

The Godfather
The Godfather: Part II
The Godfather: Part III
Blue Valentine
Inception
Black Swan
Pulp Fiction
Inglourious Basterds
Das Leben der Anderen
Her

I don't know exactly how old I was when I watched the movies, but it was in the time period of the last 5 years.

Ps: They're not in specific order kkkkk. It's hard for me to rank them.

Unlike many others, I get less confident about my top favorite movies the more I see. I'm pretty sure the list would have looked differently this time. But let's see:

The Godfather (1972) - 15
The Godfather - Part II (1974)  - 15
Scarface (1983) - 15 (didn't like it then, I guess I expected another Godfather)
My Neighbor Totoro  (1988) - 20
Goodfellas (1990) - 16 (didn't like it first either)
Groundhog Day (1993) - 15
Pulp Fiction (1994) - 16 (didn't like it either, lol)
Fargo (1996) - 17
Bleeder (1999) - 18
Lucky Luke: Daisy Town (1971) - 7?

Age: 25
Average: 15,4
Min-max: 7-20, but the core is 15-17

other statistics:

Average year of the movies: 1986
oldest-newest: 1971-1999

7 American
1 Japanese
1 Danish
1 French/Belgian

Directors: Coppola (2), De Palma, Miyazaki, Scorsese, Ramis, Tarantino, Coens, Refn, Goscinny
Top Actor: Al Pacino with 3 entries

5 Gangster movies
7 Crime-related
2 Animated, among them 1 Western
1 Comedy plus 2 Dark Comedies

2 Best Picture winners
2 winners of other Oscars
1 Golden Palm winner
2 never released in US theaters
1 remake
1 sequel
1 that inspired a TV show
5 that are neither remake, nor part of any kind of franchise

Average IMDb rating (9.2 + 9 + 8.3 + 8.2 + 8.7 + 8 + 8.9 + 8.1 + 6.8 + 6.8): 8.2

Well, my top ten is seriously out of date and I didn't get a chance to post in that previously mentioned live poll.  I'll have to think about this.

You must read in my mind, I was just thinking of asking a question that goes in the periphery of that "Top 10" issue, in fact, the question is more central as it's about the passionate and enthusiastic way we used to feel about some movies and then their surprisingly underwhelming effect when we watch them a few years later.

I'll address the question later with more details, but it's funny you bumped that JFF thread just when I had it in mind.

Haha, if I could read your mind I would have stolen some of your poll ideas, that's for sure...

HEY GUYS... I am going to watch "12 Angry Men" on a big screen in two hours. Needless to tell you how excited I am... first time I watch a classic in  theater.

That's wonderful, ElMo. I'm happy for you. The utilitarian circumstances of the pandemic have been awful.

Wow, congrats! I saw it for the first time within the past year myself! (Not on the big screen, but it was still great.) Probably my second favorite courtroom drama after Anatomy of a Murder. Hope you enjoyed it.

Mulholland Drive (23)
The Third Man (21)
Chinatown (22)
Memories of Murder (28)
Lost in Translation (17)
The Little Mermaid (3)
Double Indemnity (21)
Spring Breakers (26)
The Lives of Others (20)
It Follows (28)

(I'm guessing on a lot of these ages, but they should be pretty close. At one point I asked my mom if The Little Mermaid was the first movie I ever saw in theater, and I think she could tell by my tone of voice that I needed her to say yes.)
