That end scene isn't there, but try Sullivan's Travels.

But sweet of you to help out,

Could also be the earlier version, though that's apparently lost.

That is the one! Thank you so much, I've been searching for it for about 25 years. It's on Youtube for anyone that's interested ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeFMTfNrvg0 )

As I recollect, this movie was asked about quite a few times on the "old" IMDb message board, but for the life of me, I can't remember the title.

By the way, someone seems to be looking for the same movie title on the reelrundown.com message board; here's a longer plot summary from that posting, it case it helps with googling possibilities (nothing I've tried came up with anything):

Looking for a film that is at least 50 - 60 yrs old. It starts out where life is good and all is well. I believe the dad works with the railroad and is back at work and he gets robbed. Taken was his pocket watch and his wallet. He gets knocked out and wakes up with amnesia. In the mean time the thief gets in a struggle with someone else and gets tossed into a moving train. I’m not real clear on how the thief got hit by the train. Anyways the thief is mis identified as the dad because of the watch and wallet dah. When the dad comes to and not knowing who or what happened to him hooks up with some other bums and I believe travels from train to train trying to figure out his past life. After what could have been 10 - 20 yrs gets back home on either Christmas or Thanksgiving. As he is checking out his lost family through a window a cop happens by and is arresting him when one of the family members told the cop to forget it because of the holiday at hand. He even invited the old guy to join them “ not recognized “ but he declined thinking he was gone to long and would be a burden. And that’s is how the show ended with him walking away. I watched that show with my mother when I was about 8. Needless to say I do not know any of the people who played in the movie. Please help in identifying it. First movie I shed a tear that I recalled. Thanks B52

Thank you so much for your information. This is the film I was trying to find.
If anyone ever knows the title, I would be so grateful.
I also watched it as a young child. And wanted to see it again.
Have a nice day, Pauline Hayward, Aalsmeer, Holland
