Why was my review deleted?

My review was approved for the site and was online for a few months, several users found it useful, then it mysteriously vanished.

I never got a notification.

I "checked the status of my contribution", and it reads "Reason: Not specified. Your contribution has been declined. We did not capture a specific reason during processing."

What happened?

Hi MortoCultese -

If you feel that your review was incorrectly removed and did not violate our User Review Guidelines, please re-submit our review and our editors will take another look.

thank you, but I am asking why it was deleted, especially in such a surreptitious manner...

It could be a glitch in the system. Who knows?

I very much doubt it was a "glitch". Reviews don't just delete themselves randomly.

There is a "report" feature. Maybe someone (or a few people) didn't like your review and flagged it to try to get it taken down.

Out of interest, which movie was your review for?

as it's now over a week,  and it doesn't seem like there's gonna be any more replies, or an actual reply to my very factual question, I would like to add that it's highly disgraceful and inappropriate for a website like imdb to allow petty individuals to delete reviews they don't like or agree with and then hush it up.

Michelle, I'm guessing you're proud of your excellent attempt of sidelining the real issue with your clever suggestion, but to me it reeks of deceit. as stated in the initial post, my review was approved, found useful by several other users, and was on the site for a long time. then it was deleted stealthily and underhandedly.

Jeorj Euler, I will do you a favour and treat your comment as a bad joke or trolling, even though I am sure you did not intend it as either.

imdb relies on users to provide content for it, which it then claims copyright over, but allows prejudiced and biased "moderators" to censor it . shame, shame, shame. I am disappointed and betrayed beyond words.

Why? If it is so terrible, why acknowledge it at all?

Hi MortoCultese. Have just seen this. Is it possible if you can make the reference number you provided above clickable? I am very happy to have a look and give you help . I am not a staff member, but I am a long term prolific reviewer and have helped out a couple of times in the past. Whatever feedback I give, it will aim to be as polite as possible and really hope you get an answer. There could be a possibility, but won't know until I've seen, that you may have had a false report filed against you, and having had that happen to me a few times at the worst possible times in my life I know how that feels, it's very upsetting. Usually though you do get a quicker and more helpful response though when users come to say that reviews of theirs were inexplicably deleted, when it happened with me it was dealt with quite swiftly and taken seriously. When you know the answer, you should have it reinstated when a member of staff sees or it may mean re-submitting the review, and I can imagine that the former option would be much more preferable. Hope this helps.

Hi, Bethany. The only way that somebody other than the IMDb site authorities can take a look, in this instance, is for the submitter to post the content of the submission on the forum or somewhere it can be publicly viewed. We do not have sufficient privileges to view (by accessing the Contribute URL) the details of other people's submissions.

thank you for your reply :)

even if there was a "false report filed" on the review, the responsibility rests with the staffer who acted on that "false report", whether maliciously or ignorantly.

here's a "clickable" link, but I'm not sure if it'll work for you, or is just for me:

I wholeheartedly sympathize. Writing a review takes time and effort, and although it's not a novel or a work of art, it's something you contribute to a movie that left an impression on you. It's very annoying and discouraging to wake up one day and see that some anonymous person just erased something you did, either out of spite, or simply because they could.

It shouldn't be so easy to change / edit / delete other people's content.

I have reported a few movie comments in the past to be removed. But without exception, they were all "don't bother, terrible movie" type of one-line comments. Other than that, I like to read people's opinions on movies, whether I agree or not.

How can one even tell if a review's been removed? I don't write very many but I don't think I'd ever be able to tell if one got removed.

I just noticed my recent review for the fifth episode of the Expanse's current season mysteriously vanished  the same way. The lack of staff replies here is astonishing, given how obvious it is that most of the reviews (both written and scored) are botted and the legitimate ones disappear without a notification of any sort.

@BarryHalm

Hi

First off if you want a staff reply, replying on an old thread like this will not get a staff reply.

Please make a new post.

Staff will answer.

Post your 18 digit original contribution number for the review removed. Also it's not wise to duplicate your review and resubmit. Bots do not remove reviews. Especially on an episode of a TV show. Your review was removed because a contributor noticed a violation of the guidelines for reviews and submitted a request for removal. An actual person has to review the request. Then and only if the request is valid will any review be removed. No Bots request removal. No Bots approved it. All Humans.

 Now.

If you still have a copy of your review that was removed, post it along with your new post and I will take a peek and try and guide you to where the violation was.

Happy New Year!!
