Update Problems

Since maybe a week now, when doing updates and clicking on the check button, I am sometimes instead taken to an error page stating:

We're sorry!

An error occurred when we tried to process your request. Rest assured, we're already working on the problem and expect to resolve it shortly.

And of course upon going back, everything I did has been erased and I have to start the update over from scratch. This doesn't happen every time, but it does happen often and it never did before. What is going on? Will this be fixed?

Hi All,

Apologies again for this frustrating issue. We want to test an update which is expected to improve this and help prevent your work from getting lost if and when such an issue occurs. This will help provide our engineering team with more insight to the error, allowing them to tackle this issue at the core.

We want to get your feedback on this improvement and thus will need your user account id (e.g. ur********) to opt you in. You can find your user account id by visiting https://www.imdb.com/profile which will redirect you to your activity page with the user account id in the URL. If you're interested in being part of this beta, please share the same with us.

This is probably the same problem as https://community-imdb.sprinklr.com/conversations/data-issues-policy-discussions/issue/61bc2952e4279c627b15b3cf and it is this error where I use my reload the page approach.

I have not seen the earlier problem of a page with just the headers and footers since this error started happening.

Hi All -

I was able to replicate the contribution error and have filed a ticket for the appropriate technical team to investigate.  As soon as I have any updates on the status I will relay that information here.

Cheers!

@Michelle Hi Michelle, two weeks later and this keeps happening ALL THE TIME. Any news? Doing updates is time consuming enough without having to redo the same updates three times.

Hi @jean_morel -

I just reviewed the ticket and can confirm the issue is still being investigated.  Unfortunately, the handling has slowed down due to the holidays, however, I have communicated to the appropriate team that this issue is still consistently occurring.

Once I have an update I will post the information here.

Thanks again for your patience!

As the 50th highest IMDb contributor of all time, and with an unbroken 19 year run as a Top Contributor, I would like to continue updating IMDb, but they do not make life easy for us.

These days, when you try to do a large contribution, like completing a crew for a production, you usually spend ages inputting all the name, then click through and receive simply a screen saying:

"

We're sorry!

An error occurred when we tried to process your request. Rest assured, we're already working on the problem and expect to resolve it shortly.

Désolés!

Une erreur s'est produite lorsque nous avons tenté de traiter votre requête. Soyez assuré que nous travaillons déjà à la résolution du problème que nous pensons trouver très rapidement."

You then have to put the names all back in again a few at a time, and keep constantly submitting over and over again, and also saving in between in case you are again faced with that same screen.  Although the choosing names as you go along feature is good, the disadvantage of it is that the box is completely cleared again on the next page, leaving just the job titles.  If you do not choose a name until you get to the next page, your original inputted version will still be there, but it is an even bigger workload for the site loading the next page, as it has to also put all the name choices up for you as well.

So can't really win, whether you choose names as you go along or not.

Will all this ever be sorted?  As it is enough work submitting a crew once, without having to do it again and again until the site decides to accept it.

Anyway Happy New Year.

Dez

For the last six weeks or so, I've been plagued by the above error message when trying to add credits to existing episodes of "Coronation Street" (1960). I successfully added credits to an existing episode of a different series yesterday so I don't know if the problem can be with this particular title itself. I can be trying to add upwards of 20 cast credits to an episode with maybe one or two cast already attached. Having entered all the actor and character names, attributes and credits order, I click "re-check these updates" and get the above message.  I then click back a page and all the actor name fields are now empty (but other fields remain filled in). I then have to type out the actor names again, but if I try to "re-check" any more than four at a time, I get the error message again. So I do four at a time for a few goes. Then that stops working and the message returns. So I end up having to do them one at a time. Then that doesn't work and it's back to the error message.  Usually I then give up and submit what I can and start another update to add the remaining information. It takes ages to load the next page each time I click "re-check" as well. It's really slowing my progress adding info for this series so I wondered if anyone can shed any light on how to resolve it? I've stopped believing the error message's claim that "we're working on the problem". Thanks!

Hi,

The last couple of days, trying to add thanks credits to movies, I get the screen "We're Sorry! An error occurred when we treid to process your request. Rest Assured, we're already working on the problem and expect to resolve it shortly."

This happens after I've already done the input of the names & occupation.

Were you already aware of this problem?

Best regards,

It hinders the submissions of additions, corrections and deletions, and can also result in duplicate submissions.  Very irritating!

It is very sad and very disappointing that this issue is STILL on going, some three months after first reported, and agents are no longer even answering or commenting when the issue is submitted again. The most I can submit at any one time is 20 items and then ONLY if you "recheck these updates" to get a green acknowledgement for every five or six items entered.

I recently noticed that Peter Rotter has frequent credits that are listed with and without the uncredited attribute. I tried just deleting one and you get this infamous page. Reloading the page (which works when I get this page editing TV episodes) does not work. I have no idea why it can't process a single credit and ignore the other 1100+ credits he has. There is no way around this except to edit individual episodes which is significantly more work. 177 episodes alone for The Walking Dead.

Well, that sucked but I audited all 177 episode episodes of The Walking Dead. This should have been a 5 minute task instead of an all day thing.

This (type of problem) also happened to me recently. I was in the process of updating many credits to one title, so I assume that this problem can happen when there are a lot of credits. Annoying for sure.

@eboy

When this happens to me updating a title (and it happens a lot of TV episodes), a refresh/resubmit always works for me.

Some pages with tons of credits barely even load as a regular page. There was a recent page vandalized with several thousand false credits that is hard to access at all, I always thought it was because there was too much info for a browser to handle.

I've always found it hard to edit or add more than 70 credits at a time to anything, have to do it parts or I get the same screen you posted.

When you're contributing data, this is a slap in the face or a big "F--- you!"

I'm trying to contribute credits for the supplements on Criterion's My Brilliant Career (which are listed but completely bare-bones), which is already overdue at the library, which closes in 40 minutes, so whoever contributes this data won't be me.

Nice way to disrespect people's time and effort.

Hi all,

Thank you for your continued patience.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and understand how frustrating this experience must be. Our engineering team has been working to identify and resolve the issue at-hand.

We are working on an update to improve this which will prevent your work from getting lost if and when such an issue occurs. This will help provide our engineering team with more insight to the error, allowing them to tackle this issue at the core. We will be announcing the beta for this experience soon and it'll be great to have you be part of this.

@Taylor Hi Taylor. Thanks for the placating reply. Very diplomatic :-) I understand that where there are computers there will always be technical issues. However, I cant help but think that if IMDB were a shareholder business, or a bank, this issue would have been solved in early December of 2021 when it first occurred. Four months to develop a solution just seems to me to be a problem. I sincerely hope that IMDB doesn't completely collapse before they figure it out.

Why no action on this?  Do you need new engineers? New programmers?  What?  This has gome on way too long.  It's an insult to contributors.

Just tried to make over 200 additions, correction and deletions on a title.  I am not going to try to submit them again (in smaller groups) and still (again) just get the "We're sorry" message. This audit took at least nine hours and was near completion.  Enough with being "sorry."  Solve the problem.

This usually appears when one is about to complete the additions, deletions and corrections from a title's on-screen credits.  It sends shudders through me with the possibility that a day's, two days', three days' work could be lost, or hindered from being submitted.  It also appears when trying to reopen a saved page.

How can this be avoided? It is very frustrating.

@Ngoel Hi there

Test 12APR2022 - submitted first trial 42 crew members over roughly 27 episodes approx 1156 items. Re-checked every 5 members and on final submission still got a crash. Saved for later. HOWEVER ... on checking tracking page after this https://contribute.imdb.com/updates/history found that there were in fact THREE submissions listed, -

220412-172521-919000  2022-04-12 17:25:21

220412-172545-831000  2022-04-12 17:25:45

and

220412-172612-234000  2022-04-12 17:26:12

as well as the saved - 220412-172612-234000 2022-04-12 17:29:51, but please note there was NO Track Contribution buttons at all, as is normal for this page.

On checking IMDb update receipt e-mails, found that 220412-172521-919000 was OK, but naturally (and correctly)  220412-172545-831000 and 220412-172612-234000 were rejected as being duplicates.

I have removed 220412-172612-234000 from my saved updates history as it no longer applies.

Despite the fail, it feels that the new system MAY/COULD be a little more stable and slightly faster (after clicking submit), than the previous system - maybe just needs some more small tweaks. The previous system had gotten so bad, I could actually watch and read the communications, handshakes, confirmations and returns between the IMDB/Amazon servers and my computer. :-)

Thank you @raynor_pretorius for testing and sharing feedback. We're attempting to ensure that the time you and other contributors take to submit data is not wasted due to this issue. Thus it's good to know that your work got saved and submitted despite the timeout issue. This is our first step in the direction of making the experience better. We'll learn from this and make more improvements.

Hi there

Test 15APR2022 - second trial 46 crew members over roughly 20 episodes approx 920 items. Re-checked every 5 members and on final submission still got a crash. Saved for later. HOWEVER ... on checking tracking page after this https://contribute.imdb.com/updates/history found that there were again THREE submissions listed, this means that the crash saving script written by IT is submitting three times -

220415-184416-443000  2022-04-15 18:44:16 ---- This one auth ok

220415-184444-908000 2022-04-15 18:44:44 ----- Duplicate submission - declined

220415-184506-685000  2022-04-15 18:45:06 -----Duplicate submission - declined

Saved - 220415-184721-338200  2022-04-15 18:47:21, again there was one Track Contribution button missing.

I have removed 220415-184721-338200  2022-04-15 18:47:21 from my saved updates history as it no longer applies.

The good news is that three other submissions of 880, 640 and 817 items respectively were submitted without error BEFORE the crash detailed above, so there is a definite improvement in the system. Good job guys.

Hi there

Test 22APR2022 - THIRD trial 32 crew members over roughly 24 episodes approx 768 items. Re-checked every 5 members and on final submission still got a crash. Saved for later. HOWEVER ... on checking tracking page after this https://contribute.imdb.com/updates/history found that there were again THREE submissions listed, this means that the crash saving script written by IT is STILL submitting three times - this is concerning as editors will assume the contributor is entering the duplicate items three times :-(

220422-120359-886000  2022-04-22 12:03:59 - approved

220422-120424-739000  2022-04-22 12:04:24 - rejected duplicate

220422-120448-865000  2022-04-22 12:04:48 - rejected duplicate

Saved -220422-120502-964200  2022-04-22 12:05:02 - I have removed this from my saved updates history as it no longer applies.

When preparing the list of additions or corrections to cast/crew, the Update form has two buttons "Check these updates" and "Save for later".

Until very recently (yesterday?) the "Save" button has performed an implied "Check" operation before saving the data. This means that when you reload the saved, partly-completed form by clicking on the link in "Your update has been saved. Should you wish to return and actually send the data to IMDb for processing, you may retrieve it at a later date using the reference number 220424-230658-376200" any changes will have green (OK), yellow (ambiguous - eg add a Roman numeral) or red (show-stopper error) for each one.

Today when I did this, the saved form did not have the colours (implying no checking had taken place) and some people's names had been translated to the "nm123245" number. If I subsequently did a "Check", the checks were carried out as normal but if I then did a "Save" and restored the saved page, the fields were once again uncoloured.

I presume this is a bug rather than a deliberate change to the functionality.

Note: This comment was created from a merged conversation originally titled "Save for later" button on Updates screen has stopped working properly - since about 23 April

@martin_695862  Thanks for the problem report; we have moved your post to this thread where the team concerned can track the issue.
