Please stop fabricating nonexistent distributing companies

A company called Sony Pictures Releasing is supposed to operate in 60 countries.

I don't know about 59 of them, but I'm pretty sure Sony Pictures Releasing [fi] does not distribute anything in Finland. That's because there is no such company.

For example Manchester by the Sea (2016) and Ghostbusters (2016) were released here theatrically by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Not by this so-called Sony Pictures Releasing.

Crank: High Voltage (2009) went straight to DVD and Blu-ray. So this is total nonsense: 'Sony Pictures Releasing (2009) (Finland) (theatrical)'

At least, Box Office Mojo provides no numbers for Finland release.

Hi, Kari Hakkinen.
Could it be that "Buena Vista" is generally the sub-distributor for Sony Pictures Releasing?

Sony Pictures Releasing sure exists in France, and you can spot quite a few in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_film_distributors_by_country. But apparently there were none in Finland ever.

Copyright holders are no real distributors.  With the exception of Warner Bros., Universal Pictures and some others who operate worldwide. Others tend to sell distribution rights locally.

This is one way of putting it:

Sony Pictures Releasing (2017) (Argentina) (theatrical) (through United International Pictures)

To me that's just too complicated. Why bother with Sony when United International Pictures takes care of the job in practice for them? Isn't  that the whole idea: Who does the distribution in Argentina? UIP, not Sony.

I believe that any discussion on what is "real" distributors is close to the egg and chicken paradox looking out and in. I also believe that only distributors should be named as "distributor" in a movie database.

And I hope the IMDb guides help us somehow to stay correct in decisions. For the purposes of IMDb, the following are classified as distributors (in "B" section, among others):
A company that distributes a film to theaters.
A company that distributes a video to a broad range of retailers.
In the section "A" of the same guide:
  • The company name should always include the country code in square brackets after the company name - e.g., Company [us].
  • We do not remove a distributor when it loses the right to distribute a title; rather, we modify the year range to reflect the end of distribution rights.
In view of the above. Whether Sony Pictures Releasing [fi] distributes anything in Finland or not now, the only relative question remains: did this company serve as distributor at the time of the movie release in that country?

As I said from the very beginning, there is no such data in Box Office Mojo that the theatrical release had happened.

PS: please also understand correct that the country code may function only as a virtual sign for a local presence of a transnational distributor.

IMDb has also said that a company with multiple branches in different locations should only have one listing:

Is it possible to delate Sony Pictures Releasing [fi] altogether from IMDb? Preferably for ever.

Or is it better if I correct them myself one by one? (Sony Pictures Releasing [fi] ---> Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures [fi], etc.)

Hi Kari -

If the titles were distributed by "Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures [fi]", I would encourage you to submit those company additions/corrections through our online Update form individually.

Otherwise, in the meantime, if you are certain that "Sony Pictures Releasing [fi]" is a non-existent company, please report the company page for removal through our Contact Form following the path: IMDb Fan/Contributor questions --> Other data types --> Other data issue with the relevant details and our staff can take a look at the company listing.
