Page operation problem on title "The River"

Good day Community Team

I have bee trying - unsuccessfully - for a number of days to get the Help Center to look at what I believe is a code fault in title "The River" - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10321842/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_7  There seems to be a new team there who only quote straight out of the center handbook and insist on a screen grab - a long winded bloated process on their system. I do not know how a screen grab can show a fault in a sequence of mouse clicks, nor have I ever needed to do this in 11 years of submitting to the previous team. I even submitted (copy below) a full sequence of events which will show the error, and which they flatly ignored. Hopefully someone on this community would be willing to try and assist me. Thank you in advance. Ray.

From your reply I see a potential reason why helpdesk does not see the problem. I am a contributor to IMDB,  so I use the standard pages as a VISITOR to IMDB would see it – not your Pro version - https://pro.imdb.com/title/tt10321842/episodes -  On the standard public view page episodes with no dates may be listed in unknown, but they should STILL appear in order, in the season list.

Since I do not know of any way to screengrab mouse clicks, please follow the tutorial below to get to the issue. We will use - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10141052/?ref_=ttep_ep_tt

When you open the title main page and click on ‘episode guide’ you get last season entered list (if there is episode dates) and the year block is BLANK. Now click on season block you will see season 2. Click on season 2. Now you will see a page of season 2 episodes (without dates)  but ARE listed as season 2. If you select a year that list shows up and the season list BLANKS OUT. As far as I have found in 11 years clicking on the season link number will show ALL episodes in that season whether or NOT they have air dates.

Here’s two more examples as above - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13459400/?ref_=ttep_ep_tt and https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1020913/?ref_=ttep_ep_tt

Now open - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10321842/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_7 – click on episode guide, and you will see that the season block is blank, and the year lock 2020 is highlighted. This is the last season entered with dates. However, if you click on season you see 4 seasons, but 1,2 and 4 do NOT show up when clicked as the year is STILL LOCKED to 2020. I may be wrong but I believe that if you click on a season, the year block SHOULD blank out, allowing you to access the season you have selected, whether there are air dates or not. That is why I maintain that The River  page has an error in its coding or whatever drives the page.

Hi @raynor_pretorius -

I am trying my best to understand the issue here to help you, please forgive me if I didn't get you right but I will try until I get this solved for you.

Is the issue that on other series- ie the one you put as an example, you can search by year and by season, and the other will just blank out when you choose to search by the other, like here:

And in the series the River where you found the malfunction, you can only search by year

I followed your steps and that is the difference I noticed, please let me know if I got you so I can report this issue.
Cheers!

A notable difference between your screenshots from The River is that Bethanny's only displays the year dropdown box while Raynor's also shows the season dropdown (which doesn't work). I also see both boxes.

@Peter_pbn That's true, didn't see that before. You said you see both boxes, do both work?

This behaviour is what happens with most series that have lots of episodes (hundreds, thousands) like soap operas or talk shows etc.

If you check some soap operas or talk shows, season browsing is disabled on most of them.

I think it's intentional because of this:

Continuous series: For some very long running continuous series that do not use seasons (typically, soap operas, talk shows, and newscasts), episode numbers are all within season 1 (and so your episode number should be in the format of 1.1284 etc).

Maybe system automatically disables it after a series page has a certain amount of episodes?

But maybe it can be manually activated again? Because for example, it's not disabled on this although it has almost 3k episodes: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106052/

But disabled on these:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083441/

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1231460/

Yes, Bethany that is the exact issue - series box not working to request while everything is locked to year 2020, but there are indeed two boxes on the link as pointed out by Peter pbn. Perhaps this link will show you the two - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10321842/episodes/?year=2020&ref_=tt_ov_epl - Not sure which link you had that showed only the year block, bit it concerns me that there could be so many different looking pages for the same title. No wonder we all go crazy :-)

Thank you so much for getting the story and I really appreciate you going the extra to try and help.

Thank you sooooooo much for all the people who have seen and understood the problem - Bethany, Peter pbn and mbmb.

@mbmb Hi mbmb. I see your point about the IMDB episode guidelines but I sure as hell hope the IMDB codebusters are taking note, that the exact wording is "that do not use seasons" - after all, we ARE the contributors, and if we are watching shows that are aired in seasons and entering them as seasons, then the codebusters should absolutely NOT be allowed to make the page operate ANY other way. Just my five cents opinion based on 600000+ total entries. I know there are some with millions, but every single one of mine has been seen, and recorded onto a spreadsheet per title before entry onto IMDB. No spiders and robots for me :-)

I recognize this from talk shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Show with David Letterman

Although episode numbers for multiple seasons have been entered, the season navigation has apparently been disabled.

I think there is also an issue in the main title pages: the 'Episodes' section includes a season dropdown list, but what happens if you use it?

@Bethanny Hi Bethany - do you think those in power have done anything on this problem in the last two weeks ? :-) Since the page is still not operating correctly, I would guess the answer would be a no .....

@raynor_pretorius Hi!

It is a work in progress, it might take some time since it seams to be happening in other pages too. I will definitely let you know if there are any updates.

Cheers!

Thanks so much Bethany. Appreciate it. There definitely seems to be several issues at the moment - another example below - and it is not a new title as is suggested. This has occurred with several different titles submissions I am working on and even several times within the same submission on one title -

@Bethanny Hi Bethanny. 'The River" page still seems broken. Do you think after a month they have made any progress, or are the code boys giving you the same run around that the rest of us contributors are getting ? Thanks for your assistance.

@raynor_pretorius Hi!

I can see my request is still in progress so they are still working on it.

@Bethanny Hi Bethanny. Thanks again. I must confess though, to a quiet giggle over this. The amount of resources that have been directed into the new pretty pictures pages while the underlying information is incorrect or not accessible is mind blowing. Kinda like a Bank proudly rolling out a shining new app for customers, while they cannot see how much money that have or where it is going ..... I bet they wouldn't be happy.

Also thank to both @Peter_pbn & @mbmb for the insights to help us figure this out.

Cheers!
