need character search

Character search is needed in the following ways:
1) Within Name search, so we get all the Actors who performed the character
2) Within Advanced Title Search, so we get all the Titles that include the character
3) Within Filmography, Refine by Character.

I strongly support bderoes's idea. This capability would be extremely helpful in creating polls based on characters. I voted for this idea and recommend that all poll authors likewise do so.

Announcement
Updates to Characters
https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/changes-to-imdb-characters

Today we are modifying the display of Characters across IMDb.
 After in-depth discussion and examination,
we have decided to simplify the display of Characters on IMDb,
focusing our on-going efforts towards title specific character details.
While in concept, we love the idea of character data spanning across all titles,
in practice we do not feel our past experience lived up to expectations.
The majority of our previous character pages were dead ends...

The problem with this idea is that it will not separate the character by continuity. Spider-Man has been played by many actors and has appeared in many titles, but they are not all the same character. Toby Maguire's Spider-Man is not Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Into the Spider Verse has many actors who voiced many Spider-Man characters, but they are not the same Spider-Man either.

I would not want the characters from the last two awful Dukes of Hazzard films in any list for the characters from the original Dukes of Hazzard. I don't want to see the characters from the awful 21 Jump Street films listed with the characters from the 21 Jump Street television series either.

I want character pages back so that continuities can be maintained for each character who appeared in two or more separate movies or series. Also, sometimes a full character name isn't used in the credits of a movie or series for a character from another movie or series. For example, the character Cheyenne Bodie from Cheyenne is credited as only Cheyenne in The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw. So searching for this specific character would require several searches to find all of the works where he appeared.

Since IMDb deprecated character pages, there has been a need to be able to search for characters across titles. Ideally, it would be very helpful for IMDb to implement a character search with capabilities similar to the one that bderoes describes in her original post in this thread. As an interim partial solution, one can use this search text within Google:

site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/* {character}

Where:

{character} is a specific character.

For example:

site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/* superman

produces character pages related to superman.

https://www.google.com/search?&q=site%3Aimdb.com%2Ftitle%2F*%2Fcharacters%2F*+superman

This is another Google search that may be helpful: site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/{NameID} {character}

Where:

{NameID} is the name ID for a specific actor.

{character} is a specific character.

nm0001660 is the name ID for George Reeves

For instance, this search returns the character pages for titles in which George Reeves plays Superman:

site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/nm0001660 superman

https://www.google.com/search?&q=site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/nm0001660%20superman

This is another Google search that may be helpful: site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/* {character} {ActorName}

Where:

{character} is a specific character.

{ActorName} is the name of an actor / actress

For instance, this Google search returns character pages for George Reeves playing superman.

site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/* superman "George Reeves"

https://www.google.com/search?&q=site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/*%20superman%20%22George%20Reeves%22

@dan_dassow

? ?

Just a comment for you...

site:imdb.com/title/*/characters/* superman

https://www.google.com/search?&q=site%3Aimdb.com%2Ftitle%2F*%2Fcharacters%2F*+superman

4,580 results (0.43 seconds)

Do not need all that Google tracking info...

This discussion appears fairly pointless. It has been several years since the handy character pages have been removed. Let's just face it, IMDb wants to make money and so removed everything it deemed as cruft. We will just have to keep track of who is which Superman in the various Superman franchises on our own without this, now kneecapped, database. I would suggest going over to Fandom and starting a character database there. We will never get one back here or even a way to make a faux character listing.

I've been watching this thread and others like it going nowhere for way too long. It is pointless.
