Solved

I'm the director and producer of the film and can't change the release date - Reason Unable to verify.

IMDB or @Michelle can you please help us with this issue.

I have been trying for 2 years to get IMDB to correct the release date of my film. The latest one was on 9 November 2021 with case #211109-072308-636000.

We are just trying to get the entry deleted that says 2016 and show the first and original release date of the movie in August 2019.

It took 3 long years to raise the funding to get the film finally completed and along the way we showed scenes, teasers, clips, and unfinished versions to financiers and festivals and showcases to raise money to get the film finished.

We finally finished production in 2019 and released the film in August 2019. But IMDB still has 2016 wrongly on there as the year it was released. We were still shooting in 2016 so this date is wrong and I am not the one who listed this.

I tried submitting proof but there is no where to upload on the site as it says there is. No check box to allow me to upload the proof.  I went to the "Contribution History" page and the "provide an explanation to assist in processing this submission" option is nowhere to be found.

I have deal memos, correspondences with the editor, sound mixer, DP etc showing the dates we were still shooting and trying to get the film edited in 2019.

@Michelle  can you please help us once and for all to correct our release date? See the reason below that my submission has been denied over and over again with no way to prove this is wrong. I greatly appreciate your help in advance. Thank you so much!

If there is anyone here at IMDB checking and can help assist me in getting this wrong date deleted, here is one correspondence showing proof between our team and an editor when we were working on picture lock in April 2019.

Please fix it for us. Thank you so much.

Hi Queennege -

As it is our policy not to remove factual information, if any version of the film was screened at a festival we will consider this a valid release, this is why we need to retain the 2016 Release date associated with the American Black Film Festival screening.

Any subsequent versions and screening dates can be added to the Release Dates section, though I can see that there are already several 2019 dates listed or various regions.

Thanks for your reply Michelle, I am so appreciative. To your answer, is this the case for an unfinished film and preview promos? The film can not be released before it's even finished filming. We shot some scenes and were still in production but needed financing to complete production. We were invited to showcase some of what we shot to attract executive producers and investors. It seems very very unfair to classify a film as released when it has not been released. Would you please consider our special case based on the details provided? We would be most grateful. I realize it lists the 2019 dates but the big highlighted date right next to the title shows "2016" which gives the impression that the film was released then, when it was not. I hope you can help us get this corrected. Thank you.

I can be wrong, but I believe ”private screenings” doesn’t count. But not fully sure what is ”private screening” and what is ”public release”. Since probably both can happen on film festivals and such.

From the guide:

Exceptions for adding a release date

  • On occasion titles are shown to non-public focus groups to assess audience reaction before making final edits. As such, these should not be considered as release dates.

  • Market screenings that are by private invitation only are not considered public releases, therefore should not be considered as release dates.

Hi Queennege -

Based on the sources I found, the 2016 screening appeared to be a public festival event and was advertised as a "world premiere" for the film, as such,  we will need to retain the 2016 release date.

However, if the version shown at the festival was a preview version, you can submit the "preview" attribute to the existing listing.

Thanks for getting back to me Michelle. How would I list it as such? And would it still have that big released in "2016" in big bold letters right next to the title? That is the problem and the hurtful part. That's all people see. No distributor is going looking for the fine print so this is why it matters.

We just feel so frustrated about this, as we were merely showing pieces of our unfinished small indie film, trying to raise funding to finish it.  So we showcased it where we could to do so. It finally took us 4 whole years to finally finish shooting it and getting it released in 2019.

If you can help us remove that inaccurate 2016 from next to the title, we would be most grateful. Just tell us the correct way we need to submit it to IMDB. We are not asking for any favors. Just to have the accurate release year listed. We have submitted proof that we were still in production and we have lots more evidencing when the film production was completed. Thanks for anything you can do to assist us in remedying the situation. Most gratefully :)

Hi Queennege -

My sincere apologies for the delayed reply.  Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, as the original screening appeared to be a public event, as per our policy, we will need to retain the "2016" title year listing for the title.

Any subsequent release dates associated with a final version of the film, can still be listed on the title page under the "Release Dates" section, however, we cannot change the title year to reflect a later date.
