"Front" writing credits?

https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0874308/

Some of the writing attributes are "front Guy Endore", "front Ben Perry", etc.

I'm not really clear on what the term means, in this context - is it the same as "as...", and if so, should they be changed?

EDIT: having just looked at one of the film titles, the credits seem to complicate things even further:

Hi @tom_wake-

Thanks for reporting this. I have modified the credits to appear as they are on-screen. I am not sure what they meant by "front" but that is definitely not how they show on screen. It is not (as) because he would be credited "as" many names that actually belong to other people, so I don't think that is the case.

Cheers!

Regarding what "front" means, it no doubt was intended to mean that a credited writer was a front for Dalton Trumbo. This is also explained elsewhere, for example:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043625/trivia?item=tr4462716

Those attributes may not be the right way of doing it – although some of them had been listed that way for many years, presumably with IMDb's approval. But Trumbo's name has now been removed, which doesn't seem helpful either.

The WGA has officially restored several of Trumbo's credits:

It announced in 2000 that it had corrected the credits for seven films written by Trumbo including “Terror in a Texas Town,” “The Boss,” “The Green-Eyed Blonde,” “He Ran All the Way,” “The Brave One,” “Cowboy” and “The Prowler.”

Trumbo, who died in 1976, had used fronts on four of those movies, and his name was omitted from the others.

IMDb has recently said that such restored credits could be listed with "originally uncredited".

@Peter_pbn Hi!

I appreciate all the information, so Dalton Trumbo should show listed but with (originally uncredited) attribute then?

Thanks!

@Bethanny

I would say so, yes.

It would also be helpful to add a note about this policy in the writer guidelines.
