Cannot set "Cast Complete" - drop-down is missing from Update page

Some time over the last two days, the "Cast Complete" dropdown on the "Update" page has disappeared. Under the "Other Corrections" heading there is now only "Episode Title / Number" and the other entry Cast / Crew Verification certifiying or verifying that cast and crew are complete has vanished. This is the case both for the normal www site and the pro site.

This is certainly the case for TV episodes; standalone movies still have the drop-down.

Has there been a change in policy: are we no longer supposed to certify whether or not the cast list for each individual episode is complete?

EDIT: This does seem to be a problem for TV Episode, though not movies. However, I was still marking cast complete for TV Episodes around midnight eastern time last night. This seems like a bug, not a policy change. If this were a policy change, you would think there would be an announcement. I can't imagine why they would remove this field.

One of the most prolific contributors for many years - I think his name is Bradley - has been campaigning for a similarly long time to remove this feature from IMDb.  It is one of my favourite features, and one which I use constantly.  However, like everything else, it is open to abuse.  Maybe Bradley has finally won.

Why would anyone want to stop the proliferation of fake credits? I have noticed that someone always seems to mark Walking Dead credits as complete before they are even fully entered but it doesn't stop me from being able to correct them. I'm not sure what the abuse would be.

Also, why just remove it from TV episodes?

Exactly. I cannot believe the IMDB would tackle the issue of premature/fake cast-complete flags by removing the ablity to set the flag altogether. If this is a problem, the sensible way is the approach the culprits, find out whether it's a misunderstanding of the process or deliberate vandalism, and either educate or ban the culprits, as appropriate.

I find "Cast Complete" as an essential way of marking a title to say "someone has confirmed that the credits are complete, so there's no need to check them when the title is next shown on TV. An example of this is the current repeats of very old episodes of Holby CIty on Drama (in the UK). Most episodes have incomplete credit-order numbers and occasionally incomplete cast. A few have a cast-complete flag, so I know there's no need to check those.

I'm sure it's a bug which will be rectified soon. I'm surprised there hasn't been a response yet from an IMDB staff member.

I agree with your Martin. I find it essential as well. This is one of the reasons that I started editing IMDb because I was frustrated that TV episodes weren't complete.

The one problem I have with the process is that it seems to only take two people to have the cast go to "Cast Verified as Complete". That seems odd to me.

I'm keeping a list of tt number and episode title (in the form ""Holby City" (1999) {Mother Love (#8.12)}") for which I have completed cast and/or crew, so that if the ability to add the flags is brought back, I can add it for all the missing titles.

I suggest other people do the same.

Alternatively, I can post the details here if an admin can add the flags while the ability to do it from the title's Update page is disabled.

Either way, it would be a crying shame if this data was lost.

Some form of comment from an admin would be useful in the meantime, to acknowledge whether this is a known bug or (heaven forbid) a feature that has been removed.

I don't know that you need to keep a list. You should just be able to scroll back through your contributions and see which ones didn't have the cast completed added to it. (This is going to be a huge list for me but I make sure all casts look correct before I finish editing the show).

It's odd because the data isn't lost for shows that have had it previously entered. I still see "Cast awaiting verification" and "cast verified" on tv episodes.

I find it easier at the point of preparing the submission to add the title to my "little list", rather than to go back and inspect the emails after the event when (if?) the cast-complete feature is added.

I agree that it is odd that exsiting episodes have kept their cast complete flag. If IMDB had decided, unilaterally and "in their infinite wisdom" (ha ha), to remove the ability to add cast-complete, then you'd think they'd also have removed it from the display of the episode and from the internal database table. The fact that it's still visible makes me wonder whether it's a cock-up rather than a deliberate policy. I could be wrong...

Martin,
You can see all of your submissions here, so you don't need to check each e-mail:
https://contribute.imdb.com/updates/history

This problem is still annoying as there have been several I have needed to do in the last few days, and I was hoping there would be a response from staff by now.

The problem with https://contribute.imdb.com/updates/history is that the dsplay changes as the various parts of a submission are processed, so it's not a historical record after that. I keep all my confirmation emails and move them from a "pending" email folder to a "processed" folder as I check off each submission to see whether it's been processed yet. It's a shame that the confimation emails don't list things like explanations for making changes, and a few details for some types of data (I forget what).

The fact that there's not been a response from the staff suggests that they already know about it - maybe because it's been planned all along.

The new(er) https://contribute.imdb.com/contributions/history/ contribution tracking page may be more helpful. It does not go back as far as the old history and there may still be gaps in the coverage but at least it gives a better record of what was submitted and what happened to it.

There is a thread somewhere on GetSatisfaction about it where you can report things that are missing or not working properly.

It sure would be nice to have an employee weigh in on why this field is now missing.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Cast/Crew Complete for episodes?.

What happened to the ability to mark Cast and Crew data as "Complete" for episodes?

It seems that at some point in the last week (or so) that option has disappeared from the list on the 'Edit Page' - it used to be at the end of the list.

Looks like it is still there for Movies, but not there any more for Episodes.

So someone's read it to merge it, but STILL not responded!

I merged the threads to keep them as a single issue that hopefully gets addressed. Champions can do this but we don't have much power over the actual IMDb site. I'm also not sure why it closed the thread which I've reopend.

Doesn't look like we'll ever get a response.  The amount of episodes I would need to mark as complete is now approaching triple figures, so I think it will soon end up too big a job anyway.

I can see the cast/crew complete option once again for Episodes. Thanks.

Interesting. No explanation as to why it went away. I guess I have some work to do for everything that I've watched the past week.

It is back on mine now too! :-)
