Birth name display

My partial "birth name" was added to IMDb over 10 years ago, when I suspect the rules were different. Since that time, I have become unwilling to have any of my middle names appear publicly, which is my right. It is not morally correct to have a personal name (or parts thereof) displayed to public unwillingly, as it is currently. I would like to have my "birth name" section erased, partly because my "legal name" is not complete or written that way, and I will not supply my other names or links of evidence as seem to be current requirements, because that is private information that IMDb has no right to display, unless the person in question (in this case me) is in favour of it. I am not.

I am overall very grateful for the use of IMDb.

But to repeat, I would like to have my "birth name" section erased please. (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2168869/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm)

Hi, Francesco. Welcome to the IMDb Community forum! Thank you for your feedback. Sorry to hear that information you consider to be private has been and is on such public display for all the world to see. Would you be so kind as to cite a law that backs up your stance?

This is not necessarily a legal matter (implying I do not claim to know all relating laws), it's a personal privacy matter. Nevertheless, the enclosed link does class this potentially as a privacy issue.

Hi myimdb.

Nothing in that article contains a reference to a persons birth name as being private per se. It makes no reference to public figures. The article below specifically states persons such as yourself in the "Public Eye".

Also IMDb/Amazon is headquartered in Washington State. The laws of that state apply.

If you are referring to the GDPR, those laws do not apply. Those are for EU reporting entities.

As an actor or individual that has any connection in the entertainment industry, you are deemed to be part of a profession that exempts your data that you claim as personal information.

Please read this excerpt:

https://www.ipc.on.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/what-is-personal-information.pdf

FACT SHEET: WHAT IS PERSONAL INFORMATION?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if an individual is acting in a business, professional or official capacity?

These acts are specifically excluded from the definition of personal information the name, title, contact information or designation that identifies a person in a business, professional or official capacity. This includes a business carried out in a home. As a general rule, information about an individual in a business, professional or official capacity is not considered to be personal information. However, even if information relates to an individual in such a capacity, it may still qualify as personal information if it reveals something of a personal nature about the individual. The context in which the information appears is important.

Now, this is an old topic that has come up on several occasions. IMDb likely will only give a "Canned" reply here. They likely will not address or answer to any degree of satisfaction to you with what you want to hear. They will continue to list readily available public information based on precedent stated in the laws of the state of Washington.

I will not reply or rebut anything that you type. The laws in Washington is clear on this matter, otherwise IMDb would have voluntarily removed "All" birth names from the database.

So my advise is to not reply here further. Please contact IMDb directly.

You are right about rules being different now than 10 years ago. IMDB now allows removal of birth name information if the person no longer voluntarily uses it and wants it removed.

Only allows removal of it from biographical data section not from credits but what you want to be removed is in biographical data section and you don't have credits with your birth name anyway so that's not an issue.

And you have a valid case with your birth name is entered incompletely on IMDB, so you won't have any difficulties to remove it I'm sure.

@dijec

Lets be specific

Can I remove my birth name from my IMDb biographical information?

IMDb permits the removal of birth names from a person's biographical details if the birth name is not broadly publicly known (i.e. it's not already widely recognized and available elsewhere through sources such as major reference sites or publications) and if the person no longer voluntarily uses it (i.e. only uses their birth name when compelled to do so by government/legal requirements, but not in other aspects of their daily or professional life).

If you no longer voluntarily use the birth name listed in connection with your IMDb name page in a public or private capacity and would like IMDb to remove your birth name from your IMDb biography page, please contact IMDb’s Customer Support for details on how to provide documentation to verify your identity and other information in support of your request (select IMDb Contributor > I need help and haven't submitted an update > Names & biographical Data > Other name and bio data issue, then select "Email").

Only requests for removal of birth names listed in biographical data will be reviewed. For birth name removal requests pertaining to titles in which a person was credited on-screen as their birth name, their credited name will remain listed in the credits section of applicable IMDb name and title pages in parentheses. This is in order to continue providing IMDb’s hundreds of millions of customers worldwide with comprehensive information about film and TV credits, thereby preserving the factual historical record by accurately reflecting what is listed on-screen.
